Baseball Defeats Penn State Wilkes-Barre in Convincing Fashion on Wednesday

WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 12, 2023) -- The King's College baseball team put up 16 hits, with six players recording multi-hit games, to defeat Penn State Wilkes-Barre, 22-2, in seven innings at Lipo Field. With the win in the non-conference contest on Wednesday afternoon, the Monarchs improve to 11-16, while the Nittany Lions fall to 0-10.

It took no time for King's (11-16) to begin their rout over Penn State Wilkes-Barre (0-10), putting up five runs on three hits including a double from Zach Day and singles from John Barry and Michael Marmolejos, as the Monarchs jumped out to an early 5-0 advantage. Three more would cross in the second off a leadoff triple from Day and a double from Jacob Sutton to hold an 8-0 edge over the Nittany Lions after just two frames.

The visitors would break the shutout, scoring one on three hits in the top of the third and another tally on a pair of hits in the top of the fifth, but King's would get back in the scoring column in the bottom of the fifth. Nick Ciszak started things off with a single to left and advanced on a Nittany Lion's error before a pair of doubles from Chase Yochem and Brandon Loner plated two more runs to see the King's lead increase to 10-2.

A monstrous sixth inning saw the Monarchs drive in 11 runs on six hits, highlighted by doubles from Barry, Sutton, and Ciszak, as the King's lead swelled to 21-2 after six innings of action. The Nittany Lions would get one more chance to stage a comeback, but their efforts fell short in the 22-2 contest.

Sutton was a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBIs, two runs, and two doubles in the win, while Day went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, two runs, a double, and a triple. Yochem posted a 2-for-5 day with three RBIs and three runs, while Ciszak was 2-for-4 with four runs and two RBIs. Additionally, Brandon Loner had a 2-for-4 effort with a pair of RBIs and runs in the win, and John Bary put up two hits, three RBIs, and three runs.

Devin Maciejewski was awarded the win as the starter, throwing 2.0 innings and holding the Nittany Lions scoreless with two hits and a strikeout. Ricky Hynick was solid in an inning of relief, allowing no runs and no hits while fanning two, and Aidan Mehal posted a scoreless outing with just one hit and two strikeouts.

The Nittany Lions were led by four at the plate with multi-hit games. Parker was awarded the loss for the visitors, giving up six earned runs on five hits while walking five.

The Monarchs will return to Lipo Field on Friday afternoon as they host DeSales University in game one of the MAC Freedom series. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
