WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 13, 2023) -- After dropping a tough contest to their cross-town rival yesterday afternoon, the King's College women's tennis team bounced back to defeat DeSales University, 7-2, at Kirby Park in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Monarchs improve to 5-8 overall and 2-3 in the conference standings, while the Bulldogs fall to 3-5 with a 1-2 conference mark.
King's earned wins at No. 1 doubles as
Ashley Kenia and
Hailey D'Amato battled out an 8-7 win with a 7-3 tiebreaker over the Bulldogs. The Monarchs also won the No. 3 doubles bout as
Payton Lloyd and
Emma Rooney defeated the DeSales pair, 8-6.
Singles play saw Kenia earn a win at No. 1 singles over Morgan Landau with set wins of 6-3 and 6-2, before D'Amato defeated Nyah Tomlinson, 6-1 and 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
Jackie Costello was victorious in the No. 3 singles match, battling back after dropping the first set, 6-2, to win the next two by scores of 6-3 and 7-5 over Alyssa Vandenberge. Lloyd earned her second win of the match with sets of 6-4 and 6-1 over Lindsay Shoemaker at No. 5 singles, while Rooney earned the final win for King's with set victories of 7-5 and 6-3 over Tara Clark at No. 6 singles.
The Monarchs dropped the No. 2 doubles match as Costello and
Braelan Drollas were downed, 8-4, by the Bulldogs pair, while Drollas fell in No. 4 singles, 7-5 and 6-1, to Hope Hoppe.
King's will look to continue their momentum in a MAC Freedom match on Saturday, travelling to Arcadia University for a 1:00 p.m. start time.
