WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 26, 2023) --
Kyleigh Dunworth and
Sarah Schultz each netted a pair of goals in the King's College women's lacrosse team's 19-6 setback to Arcadia University in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play on Wednesday night. With the loss in their final home game in McCarthy Stadium in 2023, the Monarchs fall to 2-13 overall and 1-6 in the MAC Freedom, while the Knights improve to 7-9 with a 4-3 conference mark.
It was an exciting first quarter in the MAC Freedom contest as Arcadia (7-9, 4-3 MAC Freedom) jump ahead 3-0 with 8:16 to go in the period. King's (2-13, 1-6 MAC Freedom) put up back-to-back goals thanks to a tally from
Hannah Chocallo and
Sarah Schultz on a feed from
Ashley Dias just 11 seconds apart to close within one, 3-2, with 7:01 to play in the quarter. The Knights would tack on one more score in the first to hold a 4-2 edge after the first 15 minutes of action.
The Monarchs struck first in the second as
Kyleigh Dunworth posted her first goal of the game just 30 seconds in, but the Knights would rattle off the next seven scores to take a daunting 11-3 advantage with 4:40 to play in the half.
Emilee Schultz fed her sister with 4:00 remaining before the break to put King's in the scoring column again, but Arcadia posted three more goals as the Monarchs faced a 14-4 deficit at the break.
A pair of Knights goals kicked off the second half before Dunworth found the back of the net with 5:15 left in the third. Arcadia tallied another trio of tallies, but it would be the Monarchs to get the final say as Dias scored on an assist from
Chloe Burke with 9:18 remaining before falling, 19-6, to Arcadia in their home finale on Wednesday night.
Dunworth and
Sarah Schultz totaled two points with team-highs of four shots each, while
Emilee Schultz, and Chocallo picked up points as well. Burke earned a point and also caused four turnovers with four ground balls, while
Brynn Pike caused a pair of turnovers while collecting four ground balls. Dias completed her all-around effort with two points with four shots, four draw controls, three caused turnovers, and two ground balls.
Jessie Smalley was awarded the loss as the starter while making nine saves in the first half.
Sidney Bush tallied four saves in the second in goal.
Ashley Starkey tallied eight points on six goals and two assists, while Morganne Dee added eight points on seven goals and an assist on a team-high 16 shots. Campbell Torrey won seven draw controls with four ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Emily Griffith earned the win in the net with three saves.
The Monarchs will wrap up their 2023 season on the road on Saturday afternoon as they take on cross-town rival Wilkes University at 1:00 p.m.
