SALISBURY, MD (September 1, 2023) -- After trailing by one at the half, the King's College Monarchs Men's Soccer team was not able to stage a late comeback as they fell to St. Mary's College of Maryland 4-1.Â
King's (0-1-0) got off to a quick start when
Buck Diacont took a shot on goal in the seventh minute of the match, which was soon followed by a Monarch corner, but unfortunately King's came up short after a good look on goal. St. Mary (1-0-0) soon retaliated firing a few shots of their own, before Zach Glime found the back of the net for the Seahawks in the 20th minute. Jack Nelson would put the Seahawks up 2-0 in the 32
nd minute off a rebound shot off the foot of Abdoul Anounkou.
The Monarchs began staging their comeback late in the first half when Chris Vollrath scored from inside the six-yard box in the 39
th minute to bring King's back into the game. King's applied pressure the rest of the half, which included a corner kick attempt in the 44
th minute to try to even the score, but to no avail as the Monarchs went into the half trailing by one.
Just like the first half, King's found themselves on the attack first with a corner kick, but quickly fell behind 3-1 when Glime scored his second goal of the game for the Seahawks. Senior
Liam Yair was the next Monarch to fire on goal in the 56
th minute but could not find the back of the net.
The remainder of the match saw a lot of neutral zone play as neither team recorded many shots the rest of the way. St. Mary's would tack on one more goal late in the match to see the Seahawks take a 4-1 victory over the Monarchs.
Vollrath scored the lone goal on the night for the Monarchs, and both Yair and Diacont recorded shots for the Monarchs as well.
Jake Forst was in goal for King's and recorded six saves on the night.
King's will look to rebound tomorrow in their second game of the Elmer Lord Classic, as the Monarchs take on host school Salisbury University. Kick-off is set for 3:00 p.m. at Sea Gull Soccer Complex in Salisbury, MD.
