WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 16, 2023) -- The King's College men's tennis team saw much success on day one of the King's Men's Invitational, seeing six out of a possible seven singles participants advancing to tomorrow's semifinals, while three of four doubles pairs will also compete in the semifinals Sunday at Kirby Park.
At No. 1 singles,
Logan Gregory earned a first and second round bye before handing Elizabethtown's Max Lauver a pair of 6-2 sets to advance to tomorrow's semifinal matchup against Penn College's Alexander Norris.
After a first-round bye,
John Toussaint picked up a win at No. 2 singles over Elizabethtown's Stefano Billis, 6-4 and 11-9. Toussaint then defeated Susquehanna's Thomas Hallahan 6-1 and 6-2 to earn a spot in tomorrow's semifinal match up against FDU-Florham's Ronald Duval.
More success for King's in singles play at No. 3 singles as
Patrick Pech cruised through the first two rounds thanks to byes before defeating Lycoming's Connor Albaugh. The first set went to Albaugh, 7-5, but Pech rallied to earn wins of 6-4 and 10-8 over Albaugh to advance to the semifinals against Manhattanville's Carter Hunter-Crump.
In No. 4 singles play,
Aidan Temple earned a first-round bye before falling to Manhattanville's Griffin Forberg, 6-1 and 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
The No. 5 singles bracket saw
Brendan Turowski advance to the second round on a bye. The sophomore then defeated Elizabethtown's Luke Paulson, 6-2 and 6-0, as he advanced to the semifinal's tomorrow morning against Scranton's Harrison Clark.
More success for the Monarchs at No. 6 singles as
Cody Zheng cruised to the quarterfinals behind two early bye rounds. Zheng defeated Misericordia's Hunter Wesolowski on a pair of 6-1 sets and will face Elizabethtown's Isaac Reichenbach in the semifinals.
In the final singles bracket,
Jacob Nelson advanced to tomorrow's semifinal match as he defeated Elizabethtown's Kyler Henne, falling 6-3 in set one before taking the next two by scores of 6-1 and 10-7. Nelson is set to take on Susquehanna's Carson Berry tomorrow.
In the doubles tournament, the pair of Toussaint and Gregory earned the win over Lycoming, 8-3, and will take on FDU-Florham in the No. 1 doubles semifinal.
No. 2 doubles play featured a second-round win by Pech and Temple, 8-0, over Penn College before falling in the quarterfinals, 8-6, to Susquehanna.
The No. 3 doubles pair of Turowski and Nelson defeated Penn College, 8-1, in the quarterfinals and will take on Susquehanna in the semifinals tomorrow.
The final bracket in the invitational will see Nole and
Zackary Bedwell taking on Misericordia in the No. 4 doubles semifinals.
Action will resume at 8:30 a.m. over at Kirby Park, first with singles semifinals before moving on to the doubles bracket later in the day.
