WILKES-BARRE (September 29, 2023) -- Last Wednesday, September 20th, the King's College baseball team hosted their annual Challenger Division Baseball Game at Lipo Field in the Betzler Athletic Complex. King's once again welcomed members of the Wyoming Valley Challenger Baseball League for their second consecutive year for their 19th year overall.
Instituted by King's baseball coach Jerry Greeley, the Challenger Division Game provides special needs boys and girls with the opportunity to play a baseball game with the aid of King's players. The game also provides King's players with the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the Challenger Division players. The Monarchs helped players with batting, throwing, and circling the base paths. After the game a pizza party took place as King's players, coaches, and the Challenger Division players and their parents all come together to celebrate another successful event.
"The day of the Challenger game truly is my most favorite day of the year as I see how it brings out the best in everyone," Coach Greeley stated. "It is a true life-lesson for the college players, who get so much out of seeing the joy they bring to the challenger kids. As a parent, special education teacher, and coach, I cannot even explain how proud I am of the King's players. The interactions among the King's players and the Challenger players has been absolutely amazing over the years."
The King's baseball team is well-known for its community service involvement through the squad's Extra Innings Club. The Monarchs are also known for the highly successful Jared Box Project and several other community service initiatives throughout the year.
