Venis Sets New Career Best in 6-0 Loss to Scranton

SCRANTON, PA (September 6, 2023) -- Junior goalkeeper Grace Venis set a new carer best in the cage for the Monarchs as the King's College field hockey team lost, 6-0, at the University of Scranton on Wednesday night. With the setback, the Monarchs fall to 0-3 while the Lady Royals improve to 2-1.

Scranton (2-1) took control of the contest early, striking three times in the opening period to hold a 3-0 edge over King's (0-3) after the first 15 minutes of action. Play slowed throughout the second while the Monarch defense held steady behind some key stops and three saves from Venis. The King's offense got a great look at the cage in the final 45 seconds of the half as Melanie Tlatenchi fired off an attempt that was saved by the Lady Royals goalkeeper, as Scranton maintained their 3-0 advantage heading into the break.

The hosts strung together another strong quarter, placing three more scores on the board, to go ahead 6-0. King's held the lone opportunity from either offense in the fourth quarter, earning a penalty corner in the 50th minute, but their efforts to get on the board fell short, dropping a 6-0 decision to Scranton on Wednesday evening.

Tlatenchi tallied a shot in the loss, while Venis set a new career-high in saves with eight in the complete-game effort in the cage.

The Lady Royals were led by Katie Redding who posted two goals and one assist off three shots, while four other Scranton players recorded goals in the win.

The Monarchs will head out for their second contest in their three-game road stretch on Saturday, September 9. King's travels to Immaculata University for a non-conference match up beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Draper Walsh Stadium.
