PITTSTON, PA (Jan. 12, 2024) - - In a thrilling shootout victory, King's College women's ice hockey outlasted the Manhattanville College Valiants 2-1 in the Monarchs' home rink Revolution Ice Centre this evening.
Amanda Sokol and
Abby Barlocker scored for King's in the shootout, while
Issy Lebrun and
Lucy Beal scored in regular play. This is the Monarchs first time defeating Manhattanville in program history, and their second United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) win of the season.
The first period of play started with multiple offensive opportunities on both sides of the puck, but neither the Monarchs or Valiants were able to capitalize on them until the eleventh minute. Just five seconds into power play after King's received a penalty, Manhattanville scored the first goal of the day and ultimately ended the first period with a 1-0 lead.
The Monarchs came out in the second period hungry to score and tied things up 1-1 just over five minutes into play when Lebrun found the back of the net in power play off an assist from Beal. The Valiants however took back their lead at the 9:22 mark, but it did not last long again when Beal tied the game 2-2 thanks to an assist from Sokol.
Both teams battled to score the game winning goal throughout the third period –  especially in a final six thrilling minutes – but neither could put the puck in the net. Overtime was no different in levels of excitement as the third period with impressive saves by both goalies, but still no luck finding the back of the net for either team, so it came down to a shootout.
Barlocker led the charge for the Monarchs scoring on the first shootout of the three. Manhattanville followed, scoring in its first opportunity, then the Valiant goalie saved Beal's attempt.
Syd Dahl saved Manhattanville's second attempt before Sokol scored what ultimately was the game winning goal after Dahl also blocked the Valiants' third and final chance. The Monarchs and Valiants tied 2-2, but King's won the shootout 2-1.
This game was just as much as a defensive show out as it was offensive. King's finished with 10 blocks, including two each from Lebrun, Barlocker and
Brighton Wallin. Dahl also contributed 26 saves in goal.
The Monarchs and Valiants go head-to-head again Jan. 13 for the second of their two-game UCHC weekend series at Revolution Ice Centre starting at 2 pm.
