HARTFORD, CT (Jan. 2, 2024) – The King's College men's ice hockey team fell to No. 15 Trinity College 6-0 despite a strong defensive showing. The Monarchs blocked 21 shots and goalkeeper
Matt Bidini saved a season high of 38 shots in the loss.
While the Monarchs created several opportunities to score in the first period with 13 shots, they were unable to find the back of the net despite two power play advantages early on in the period. King's played tough on defense the entire first period and held off the Bantams from scoring until there were less than four and a half minutes left. Bidini tallied 12 saves in the first period alone for the Monarchs, three of which came in an intense final 50 seconds. Trinity ended the first period with a 1-0 lead.
The Monarchs continued to battle on defense in the second period until the Bantams scored during power play just over 10 minutes into play. King's kept Trinity from scoring again until there was 1:20 minutes left in the period and prevented the Bantam from scoring in yet another intense final 50 seconds. Despite Trinity going into the third period with a 3-0 lead, Bidini saved another 15 shots in the second for a total of 27 saves up to this point. The Monarchs also tallied three more shots, two of which were on goal.
Despite a sequence of power plays for both the Monarchs and Bantams, the third period remained scoreless until there were only four minutes left in play. Trinity scored its fourth goal of the night 16 minutes into the final period and tallied two more shortly after with just two minutes remaining at the fifth goal and 52 seconds for the sixth. The Bantams ultimately won the game with a 6-0 final score.
Despite the outcome of the matchup, King's played strong defensively with 21 blocks total as a team, with
Jackson Grozelle leading the charge with four and
Mauro D'Alessandro and
Teodor Vaage tallying three each. Bidini ended the game with 38 saves, which is a season best for the goalie. Offensively, the Monarchs managed to get 23 shots off with 10 on goal.
Ethan Hersant led King's with five shots – four of which were on goal – followed by
Kent Lee with three. The Monarchs also had 31 face off wins.
King's College men's ice hockey will stay in Connecticut for its next match up against Post University at the Sports Center for Connecticut in Shelton, CT, on Jan. 3, 2024, at 1 pm.
