Ethan Hersant scored twice for King's while
Aaron Frenkel scored the game winning goal.
The first period was intense and chippy on both sides of the puck. Despite the Golden Wolves outshooting the Monarchs 29-15, King's held Alvernia off from scoring the entire period and entered the second period with a 0-0 tie.
Both the Monarchs and Golden Wolves came out hungry to score in the second period and battled head-to-head for the first eight minutes of play until Hersant put the first point on the scoreboard for King's off of an assist from
Kent Lee. The Monarchs continued to play hard on defense as well as Alvernia took 32 shots in the second period alone with no luck scoring again.
Matt Bidini tallied 17 saves in this period to help King's go into the final period with a 1-0 lead.
King's lead did not last long however, as the Golden Wolves scored their equalizer within the first minute of play to tie the game 1-1. The Monarchs were quick to respond though with Hersant's second goal finding the back of the net just 40 seconds later thanks to an assist from Frenkel and Lee. Roles reversed at the end of the period after 18:22 minutes of play when Frenkel scored off an assist from Hersant to put the Monarchs ahead 3-1. Alvernia emptied its net in the final minute of the game in an attempt to the game, and were successful in scoring a second goal, but it was not enough to catch the Monarchs. King's defeated Alvernia with a final score of 3-2.
Bidini had a career high of 62 saves in goal for a .969 save percentage.
Erik Borschevsky led the Monarchs' defense with 3 blocks, followed by
Mauro D'Alessandro and
Shota Kaneko with two each.
The Monarchs return home to Revolution Ice Centre next weekend on Friday Feb. 2 to take on UCHC opponent Utica at 7 pm for the first of a two-game series.
