Women's Ice Hockey Breaks Single-Season Wins Record After Beating Neumann

ASTON, PA (Jan. 27, 2024) - - In a record-breaking weekend, the King's College women's ice hockey team swept Neumann University in a two-game United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) series after defeating the Knights 3-1 this afternoon. With this win, the Monarchs set a new record for most wins in a season and are now 4-12-1 overall and 3-10-1 in UCHC play this season. Maddie Vaughan, Issy Lebrun and Dianna Duncan each scored one goal for King's in the win.

The Knights hit the ice with aggression from the moment the puck dropped and recorded three shots within the first two minutes, and continued to push offensively, but were unable to take advantage of their opportunities. The Monarchs continued to fight back however and scored the first goal of the game just over halfway through the first period. At the 11:37 mark, Vaughan found the back of the net for King's with an assist from Lucy Beal to put the Monarchs on the scoreboard. The rest of the period remained scoreless and King's went into the second period with a 1-0 lead.

Neumann came out hungry for a goal again as the team recorded seven shots within the first four minutes, but the Monarchs held off the Knights' pressure until the eighth minute when Neumann scored its equalizer to tie the game 1-1 at the 8:16 mark. However, King's broke the tie just 12 seconds later when Lebrun scored from yet another Beal assist to put the Monarchs ahead 2-1 8:28 into play. Despite offensive pressure applied by both teams, neither found the back of the net again and the Monarchs headed into the final 20 minutes of play with a 2-1 lead over the Knights.

Both teams went in and out of power play before Duncan scored the game winning – and her second career – goal in the thirteenth minute of play unassisted. Despite an offensive surge from the Knights' in the final two minutes of play, they were unable to score again, giving King's the win with a final score of 3-1. In the win, Syd Dahl had 32 saves for a .970 save-percentage, while Lebrun and Duncan both tallied two blocks each on defense. Lebrun also recorded 15 face off wins, and Beal led the Monarchs with11 shots.

King's College women's ice hockey will take a short trip to Toyota Sportsplex at Coal Street Park in Wilkes Barre this week to take on rival Wilkes University on Tuesday Jan. 30 at 2:30 pm.
