Monarchs Cruise to 2-0 Shutout Against Delaware Valley

WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 12, 2024) -- The King's College men's soccer team improves to 6-4-2, 1-1 MAC Freedom after beating Delaware Valley University 2-0 at McCarthy Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Aggies will move to 8-4-2, 0-2 MAC Freedom with the loss.

Six minutes into the first half, Delaware Valley's senior defender Andrew Grunwald was charged with a foul, resulting in a penalty kick for the Monarchs. Senior captain Bryce Nunes took the kick but was unable to convert. Later, following a foul on Delaware Valley's Jacob Luciani in minute 39, CJ Anderson took a shot that went out left, the Monarchs were awarded a corner kick, and Anderson redeems to score and put King's ahead 1-0 with four minutes remaining in the first half. The 1-0 score stood going into halftime.

After an even back-and-forth effort from both teams through the first 20 minutes of the second half, senior midfielder Shane Serio scores an unassisted goal to extend the Monarchs lead to 2-0 in minute 66. A yellow card was issued to Delaware Valley's Amos less than a minute later.

Through 90 minutes, King's had eight corner kicks and 19 shots with 6 being on goal. First-year goalkeeper Shane VanValkenburg tallied four saves on the night and secured his third win of the season as the starting goalkeeper.

King's is back in action next Saturday, October 19 as they travel to take on Misericordia at 6:30 p.m.
