Box Score Rutland, VT (NOVEMBER 30, 2024) – The King's College men's ice hockey team fell 7-6 to VTSU Castleton in the championship game of the Terry Moran Invitational Tournament on Saturday night. With the non-conference loss, the Monarchs move to 2-7-0, 1-5-0 in conference play as the Spartans gain their second win of the season to become 2-7-1, 0-6-0.
Ethan Hersant scored two goals in the setback to the Spartans.
Kevin Martin got the scoring going early for the Monarchs, netting his first goal of the season 33 seconds into the first period off an assist from
Kent Lee.
Zane Burleigh extended the lead to 2-0 at 5:23 with an assist from
Mikey Harrel Jr. Burleigh later received a tripping penalty at 9:46 to put the Spartans on a power play in which they were able to capitalize on with a goal from Luke Chakrabarti off assists from Emmett McHardy and Zach Papapetros at 10:14. King's led 2-1 going into the first intermission.
The Spartans tied it 2-2 48 seconds into the second period with a goal from Josef Vyvial off assists from Chakrabarti and Andrew Stefura. They took the 3-2 lead at 3:03 as Stefura netted a goal of his own.
Matt Metsa received a tripping penalty at 5:10 to put Castleton on another power play, but
Ethan Hersant flipped the script and scored a short-handed goal at 6:21 to tie it back up. The Spartans scored two more goals in the period: Emmett McHardy at 7:24 with assists from Chakrabarti and Zach Trempner and then Chakrabarti again at 16:13 with assists from McHardy and Stefura. The 4-2 score in favor of Castleton stood going into the second intermission.
In the third period, King's scored two goals in a row with
Erik Borshchevsky assisting in
Nick Snyder's goal at 2:36 and
Teodor Benno Vaage for
Johnny Malandruccolo's goal at 7:39. With help from Stone Stelzl, Jackson Kobelka scored for Castleton at 13:21 to regain the lead 6-5.
Ethan Hersant scored an unassisted power play goal at 14:56 to tie the game 6-6. The game remained tied as time expired.
With first-year goaltender
Ben Williams in net for the Monarchs in overtime, Chakrabarti scored his third goal of the game at 3:54 with an assist from Stefura to seal the win for the Spartans. Hersant went 16-14 in faceoffs and Burleigh posted three of the team's total eight blocks on the night and Williams tallied 58 saves in goal. Hersant and Harrel Jr. were also named to the Terry Moran Memorial Tournament Team.
The Monarchs are back in action this Wednesday, Dec. 4 as they travel down the street to Toyota SportsPlex at Coal Street Park for a 7:30 p.m. matchup with the Cougars of Misericordia.
