UTICA, NY (Feb. 17, 2024) - - King's College women's ice hockey team fell short 6-1 in its final regular season game against United Collegiate Hockey Conference opponent No. 14 Utica University this afternoon at the Pioneers' home rink, Utica University Nexus Center.
Aspen Wallin scored the Monarchs' lone goal of the day.
The Monarchs and Pioneers battled head-to-head for a majority of the first period in hopes of the first team to find the back of the net. Utica found it first, but not until there was less than four minutes left in play. The Pioneers utilized this offensive momentum and scored a second goal just 30 seconds after their first to end the first period with a 2-0 lead over the Monarchs.
King's continued to fight relentlessly on defense as the Monarchs held Utica to just one goal in the second period. With just barely one minute left in the period, the Pioneers found the back of the net a third time, but King's did not make it easy for them. By the end of the second period,
Syd Dahl had 37 saves in goal, 20 of which were from the second period alone.
The Pioneers scored two more goals early on in the third period while in power play. Their first goal came in around the seven minute mark while the second went in at 11:28. The Monarchs did not give in despite being down 5-0. Wallin scored with 14:37 on the clock with the help of
Lucy Beal and
Emma Dos Santos with assists. Utica tallied one more goal with just under two minutes left to play to end the game 6-1 over King's
Dahl finished the game with 45 saves, which is her third best this season.
Issy Lebrun led the Monarchs in faceoff wins with eight followed by
Maddie Vaughan with five. Wallin also led in shots with three.
The Monarchs are not yet done this season as they have clinched their spot in UCHC playoffs for the first time in program history. They are expected to play Wednesday Feb. 20, but time, opponent, and location are to be determined still. This information will be available soon at kingscollegeathletics.com.
