PITTSTON, PA (Feb. 3, 2024) - - Despite a last-minute push to tie the game in the third period, the King's College women's ice hockey team fell just short to Albertus Magnus College with a final score of 4-2 in their second game of a nonconference series this evening at Revolution Ice Centre.
Amanda Sokol and
Lucy Beal each scored for the Monarchs tonight while
Hayley Packer tallied 20 saves in goal. King's is now 4-15-1 overall this season.
As both the Monarchs and Falcons went head-to-head for offensive opportunities in the first period, Albertus Magnus found the back of the net first while in power play during the sixth minute. King's did not trail for very long however as Sokol scored off of assists from
Maddie Vaughan and
Aspen Wallin less than a minute later to tie things up. Both teams continued to fight for a chance to score again and cut the tie, but were unlucky in their attempts and ended the first period in a 1-1 draw.
Similar to the first period, the Falcons found the back of the net first again in the second period after scoring in power play just over halfway into play to gain a 2-1 lead. However the Monarchs refused to let the Falcons get comfortable with their lead and Beal scored an unassisted goal at the 13:49 mark. As time began to run out in the second period, Albertus Magnus sent one to the back of the net for the third time with just 25 seconds left in play to give the Falcons a 3-2 lead over King's going into the final period.
The third period grew more intense and aggressive as the clock ran down in the final 20 minutes of play. The Monarchs pushed for more offensive opportunities in an attempt to tie the game up, but were unable to capitalize on their 10 shots taken. They continued to play strong defense and held the Falcons off from scoring again until the fourteenth minute. King's continued to fight however, and even pulled Packer out of goal for the last minute and a half to add an extra skater, but simply were unable to find the back of the net. Albertus Magnus defeated King's with a final score of 4-2.
Four different Monarchs contributed blocks on defense, including
Rae Hughes,
Brighton Wallin,
Kait Wolf and
Ryan Bisgard.
Issy Lebrun also led King's in face off wins with 17.
The Monarchs are on the road this week on Wednesday Feb. 6 to take on United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) opponent Arcadia University at the Knights' home rink, Hatfield Ice Arena, in Colmar, PA, at 4:15 pm.
