WILKES-BARRE, PA (February 7, 2024) -- Junior
Eamonn Walsh poured in a new career-high of 31 points, while
Garrett Burys posted a double-double as the King's College men's basketball team completed the series sweep over the visiting Delaware Valley University, 98-88, in McGrane Gymnasium. With the win in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) match up, the Monarchs improved to 12-10 overall and 4-7 in the conference, while the Aggies drop to 8-14 and 2-8 in the standings.
Â
Much like their first meeting earlier this season, the Delaware Valley (8-14, 2-8 MAC Freedom) offense came out strong, leading King's (12-10, 4-7 MAC Freedom) 6-2 after the first 1:35 of play, but back-to-back scores from Burys and Walsh tied the game with 17:16 to go in the opening half. After three lead changes and two ties, the Monarchs opened the scoring with 11 unanswered points, including five from
Jaden Hall, to take a 24-15 edge with 10:03 left. King's continued to shoot the ball well throughout the first, leading by as much as 18 off a jumper from
Carmine Castiello with 1:22 to go as they had the 50-34 edge over the Aggies heading into the locker room.
Â
The King's advantage swelled to 21 on a layup from
Chris Patton with 17:14 remaining in the contest before Delaware Valley made their push. The Aggies closed within 13 with 14:31 on the game clock, but a 9-2 run by the Monarchs slowed their efforts and pushed the lead back to 20, 72-52, with 11:58 remaining. The teams would trade scores with Delaware Valley desperately attempting to overcome the deficit, inching within as many as 12 points with 3:38 left. Despite their 8-2 stretch to end the game, the Aggies would not find a response to the high-powered Monarchs offense as King's defeated Delaware Valley, 98-88, in McGrane Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
Â
Walsh tallied his new career-best of 31 points on a 9-for-14 shooting night, going 5-for-7 from beyond the arc, with eight rebounds and two assists, while Burys added a double-double of 13 points, 15 rebounds, two assists, and two blocks.
Chris Patton recorded 13 points with four boards, four assists, and a steal, while Hall totaled 13 points off the bench.
Darren Yost had a strong outing, filling the stat sheet with six points, a team-high six assists, and five rebounds, while both
Ben Rodner-Tims and
Patrick Bennie added nine points and two boards, with Rodner-Tims also putting up three assists and a steal.
Â
Godly Marc paced the Aggies with 22 points, four assists, three rebounds, and two steals, while Zoelin Pair pulled down 11 boards.
Â
The Monarchs finished the night shooting 50% from the field and 45.5% from three, dishing out 22 assists on their 34 field goals. The defense limited the Aggies to a 26.9% performance from beyond the arc while out rebounding their foes, 46-38. King's grabbed 13 offensive rebounds that led to a 19-17 edge in second-chance points, while the bench out scored Delaware Valley's 33-16.
Â
King's will look to remain in the win column on Saturday afternoon as they face a tough road test at Stevens Institute of Technology. Tip off in the MAC Freedom contest is set for 3:00 p.m. in Hoboken, N.J.
