Monarchs Fall Short in Overtime Against Immaculata

IMMACULATA, PA (March 22, 2024) -- The Monarchs (1-5) come up short in a hard-fought battle against Immaculata (5-3) during an overtime loss on Friday night.  The King's College lacrosse team fell to the Mighty Macs 6-5 in Draper Walsh Stadium.
 
Immaculata set the tone for the matchup with a goal at 12:04 by Baily Manion. After a forced turnover by Jon Wiedow (Sr.), Jake Cierech (Jr.) found the back of the net at 6:22 to tie the game. The Monarchs were not done there as Josh Hilpp (Fy.) found John Wall (Jr.) for another goal at 3:51. King's had the lead 2-1 at the end of the first quarter.
 
The hosts netted a goal at 12:28 to tie the game in the beginning of the second quarter. Though the Monarchs were on the defensive end for most of the quarter, they worked hard and caused several turnovers with a shot clock violation. The Mighty Macs eventually gained a tally by Manion at 2:13. Immaculata was up 3-2 heading into halftime.
 
King's won the first faceoff of the second half to give them an edge on their opponents, but it was scoreless within the first 10-minutes of the third quarter. At 6:29 Immaculata scored to give them a two-point cushion. That was not stopping the Monarchs as Joe Giannella (Sr.) netted a goal at 2:28 and Cierech wasted no time with a goal at 1:15 to tie the match for a third time. The Mighty Macs found the back of the night for the last tally of the third quarter at 1:03. King's were down 5-4 going into the fourth quarter.
 
Both adversaries traded shots to start the fourth quarter, but at 10:18 Ryan Lynch (So.) scored a goal thanks to an assist by Ben Spencer (Jr.). The remainder of the quarter was scoreless and after a blocked shot by King's, the game was going into overtime.
 
The Monarchs had the momentum with Geno Casceillo (Sr.) winning the opening faceoff of overtime. Jackson Campbell (Sr.) had back-to-back saves to help King's regain possession. Though Immaculata was able to get the ball back and after a timeout they netted the final shot of the game at 0:41.
 
King's finished with 41 shots, 36 ground balls, six caused turnovers, and 20-22 in clears. Cierech led the squad with two goals. Casceillo had seven ground balls while Ryan Barnes (Sr.) and Wiedow had five each. Campbell produced 17 saves with a save percentage of .708 in net.
 
Immaculata ended with 49 shots, 32 ground balls, 12 caused turnovers, and 20-21 in clears. David Azzarano earned four goals on 12 shots for the Mighty Macs. Robbie Wishart picked up eight ground balls. Jake Klosiniski went 8-15 in faceoffs.
 
The Monarchs will be back in action on Wednesday, March 27th at 7 p.m. to take on Hood in McCarthy Stadium. After Easter break, the team will travel to Lebanon Valley on Saturday, April 6th at 1 p.m.
