Baseball Dominates Third Inning to Win 15-6 Over Muhlenberg

WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 10, 2024) - - After a dominate ten-run third inning, King's College baseball picked up a 15-6 non-conference win over Muhlenberg College this afternoon on the Monarchs' home pitch, Lipo Field. Zach Jenkins contributed a triple for the Monarchs in his first at-bat, while Jaiden Wanamaker added two doubles, including one in the fourth for two RBIs. Dusty Shaver also picked up his second win of the season on the mound as King's advances to a 9-14 overall record.

After a relatively calm first two innings where the Monarchs only scored once in the bottom of the second inning from Jenkins' triple, King's got hot at the plate in the bottom of the third. Nick Ciszak kicked things off as he sent a long single to right field and earned two RBIs, followed by Michael Marmolejos who also singled and sent Chase Yochem in to score. Brennen Schneider earned an RBI after reaching second on an error that allowed Ciszak to touch home. The Monarchs continued to let the bats fly as Jenkins tallied another RBI for himself as he singled to left field just before Jacob Sutton singled up the middle to pick up two more runs and put King's ahead 7-0. Zach Day continued the offensive momentum as he reached first on fielder's choice and added an RBI once Jenkins got home just before Yochem got on thanks to an error that allowed Sutton to score. King's led 11-0 over the Mules going into the top of the fourth.

Muhlenberg put itself on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth when Johnathan Toth earned two RBIs on a double before scoring himself when Spencer Hobson singled to right center field. King's capitalized on a Wanamaker double to pick up two more runs in the bottom of the inning to build its lead up to 13-3 over the Mules.

The Mules rallied in the fifth inning in an attempt to make a comeback, but fell short as they only plated two runs. After making some big defensive stops in the bottom of the inning to hold off the Monarchs, Muhlenberg put one more run on the board to tighten its trail to just 13-6. King's did not stay complacent however and tallied two more runs in the bottom of the sixth when Marmolejos reached first on an error and picked up two RBIs.

Both teams played strong defensively in the last three innings which prevented the Monarchs and Mules from adding to the scoreboard, giving King's the win with a final score of 15-6.

Shaver charted the win after only allowing two hits and no runs earned in 3.0 innings pitched. Schneider contributed on the mound for the Monarchs as well, pitching the final two innings of the game and finishing with no hits and a strikeout. Marmolejos and Ciszak led King's at the plate with three RBIs each in four at-bats while Marmolejos added two hits and a run as well, while Ciszak plated two runs and one hit. Day and Yochem also contributed two runs and one RBI as Day also tallied three hits in five at-bats. Kosar added three runs from one hit, and Jenkins finished the day with three hits, two runs and two RBIs after stepping to the plate five times.

King's steps back on Lipo Field for a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom game against the Lebanon Valley College Flying Dutchmen on Friday, April 12, with first pitch set at 4 pm.
