Second-Half Dominance Gives the Monarchs a MAC Freedom Win

MADISON, NJ (April 17, 2024) -- It was a full team effort in the battle against the FDU-Florham Devils (1-12, 0-4 MAC Freedom) on Wednesday night. The Monarchs had big second half push to take an 18-7 win over the Devils. The squad is now 2-9 overall and 1-3 in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom play.
 
It was a battle to start the game, but King's took a 2-0 lead early on as Ben Spencer (Jr.) scored back-to-back goals with 10:31 left of the opening quarter. FDU-Florham wasted no time and found the back of the net four straight times to have a two-point lead at 4:28. The Monarchs frustrated their hosts as Ryan Barnes (Sr.) netted a goal at 1:14 and Ryan Lynch (So.) added his own tally at 0:07. The contest was tied at the end of the first quarter 4-4.
 
The second quarter was scoreless for four minutes when King's gained an advantage with a player up and Barnes connected Jake Cierech (Jr.) for another Monarch goal. The Devils scored soon after, but John Wall (Jr.) had other plans and netted an unassisted goal at 9:17. The hosts were not going to make it easy for King's and they snuck in a goal at 6:34 to tie the game 6-6. The Monarch offense continued to find an edge with several shots on goal. At 4:06 Spencer dished out an assist to Wall to take the lead 7-6. The remainder of the first half was scoreless with the Monarchs having momentum head at halftime.
 
Spencer scored the first goal of the second half at 12:25 for a hat trick thanks to an assist by Barnes. Though FDU-Florham pestered King's and found the back of the net at 9:26. It was not until 6:44 when the Monarchs created a 6-0 jolt that included goals by Lynch, Wall, Spencer, and Geno Casceillo (Sr.). At the end of the third quarter, King's led 14-7 to take full control of the matchup.
 
The fourth and final quarter was much like the third as Brendan Dennis (Fy.) found the back of the net at 13:14. Both teams went head-to-head for seven minutes as the Monarch defense continued to push the tempo. Nate Hullinger (Jr.) went on to score three-straight goals to close out the game and King's won 18-7 at the final buzzer in Robert T. Shields Field.
 
The Monarchs finished with 40 shots, 29 ground balls, and went 22-26 in clears. The team added a highlight to their exciting victory after witnessing eight different players find the back of the net, they tallied the most goals since taking on the Devils in 2021. Lynch and Spencer had a total of 10 points with four goals and one assist each. Wall earned three goals and two assists, while Hullinger added three goals of his own. Barnes passed out a career-high of five assists. Casceillo picked up eight ground balls and scored one goal. Ardila and Wiedow fueled the defense with four caused turnovers each. Jackson Campbell (Sr.) produced eight saves in net for the evening.
 
FDU-Florham ended with 30 shots, 30 ground balls, and went 10-11 in clears. Rickey Lewis had three goals and Nicholas Perillo was right behind with two. Nick Matthew collected 10 ground balls and Ben Weintraub had 10 saves as goalkeeper for the Devils.
 
King's will celebrate their seniors on Saturday, April 20th before taking on Misericordia at 1 p.m. The crew will be back in McCarthy stadium at 7 p.m. to battle Arcadia on Wednesday, April 24th.
