Men's Volleyball Battles with #1/#2 Stevens in Season Finale

WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 3, 2024) -- In their 2024 season finale, the King's College men's volleyball team fell, 3-0, to #1/#2 Stevens Institute of Technology in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) play in McGrane Gymnasium on Wednesday night. The Monarchs finish their season 18-7 overall and 1-7 in the conference, while the Ducks improved to 28-1 and an unbeaten 8-0 in the MAC standings.
 
King's (18-7, 1-7 MAC) had a strong start, trading points with the Ducks before leading, 3-2. Stevens (28-1, 8-0 MAC) got three consecutive kills from Brandon Rogers to open a 10-5 run, holding a 12-8 edge over the Monarchs. King's chipped away thanks to tallies from Greg Bousquet, Logan Dougherty, and Gavin Gilhool to close within one, 12-11, but Stevens rattled off the next eight points in the set to build a daunting 20-11 advantage. With the Ducks facing the set point, King's battled back within 24-18 featuring a kill from Alex Martelacci, but the visitors had the final say taking the opener 25-18.
 
Stevens stormed out to a 13-1 lead in the second before cruising to a 25-13 victory in the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
The Monarchs did not go down without a fight, outscoring the Ducks 5-2 early in the second. Stevens tied the set at 7-7, but a kill from Dougherty and a Ducks miscue sparked a 5-3 rally for King's. The game featured two more ties before Stevens took control behind a 8-3 spurt to jump ahead, 19-16. King's hung tight, battling back within three, 23-20, on scores from Bousquet and Dougherty, but the Ducks took care of business and defeated the Monarchs 25-21 in the final set to win the match, 3-0.
 
Dougherty paced the offense with nine kills on 20 attempts with no errors, hitting .450, while Bousquet added seven kills and two blocks. Nick Greenawalt had a balanced effort with four kills, four digs, an assist, and an ace, while Ben Maskiell handed out 15 assists. Additionally, Mike Bizzoco added four digs, and Declan Larson recorded three to lead the defense.
 
The Ducks were led by Nathan Lancia with 10 kills on 16 attempts, hitting .438, with eight digs, three aces, two assists, and a block, while Sebastian Huyke tallied 24 assists and six digs.
 
The Monarchs recorded 24 assists on their 26 kills in the match while forcing 16 Ducks attack errors.
