Varner Topples Own Discus Record to Highlight Season Opener for Women's Track and Field

DALLAS, PA (April 5, 2024) -- Brandy Varner toppled her own program record in the discus throw to lead the King's College women's track and field team in their outdoor season opener at the Misericordia Twilight Invitational. In their season opener, 24 Monarchs had podium finishes while seven won their respective events.
 
On the Track
200 Meter Dash

Nicole Zambetti had a podium finish in the event, taking eighth in 29.06 seconds. Misericordia's Gianna Iglesias won the event in 27.41 seconds.
 
400 Meter Dash
Nicole Zambetti finished fourth overall as she posted a time of 1:06.69. Kristin Gallagher of Misericordia was the top finisher in 1:01.96.
 
800 Meter Run
Liz Porto led a trio of Monarchs in the event as she finished second in her heat in 2:47.06, while Cecilia Chipriano crossed in a personal best time of 2:49.74. Mara Ryan rounded out the King's runners with a time of 3:12.76. Misericordia's Madison Kammer earned the top spot in 2:27.16.
 
1,500 Meter Run
Cecilia Chipriano led a pair of Monarchs as she finished eighth overall in a personal best time of 5:40.46, while Mara Ryan placed third in her heat in 6:31.47. Misericordia's Grace Morningstar won the event in 4:52.39.
 
In the Field
High Jump

Victoria Zultevicz won the event as she cleared a height of 1.32 meters.
 
Long Jump
Victoria Zultevicz and Madelynn Perfilio claimed the top two finishes in the event, as Zultevicz won the long jump with a personal best jump of 5.20 meters, while Perfilio was close behind with a distance of 5.18 meters.
 
Triple Jump
Madelynn Perfilio earned the top spot in the event as she recorded a mark of 10.47 meters.
 
Pole Vault
Victoria Zultevicz won the event as she cleared a height of 3.10 meters, while Madelynn Perfilio and Liz Porto placed second as the pair tied with a mark of 2.50 meters.
 
Discus Throw
It was another extraordinary performance for King's in the discus as all 10 of the Monarchs in the event finished in the top 13. Brandy Varner won the event with a new program-record mark of 40.16 meters, topping her previous throw of 40.09 meters, while Caitlin Kirk took third with a throw of 35.07 meters. Delaney Hilferty finished fourth with a toss of 32.71 meters, and Rhian Crowley recorded a mark of 30.46 meters. Katey Shoemaker was next to finish with a throw of 30.33 meters, and Sophia Lukowski placed seventh with a toss of 29.68 meters. Anna Bellucci was the final thrower to record a podium finish in eighth with a mark of 28.54 meters, and Roni McClelland posted a throw of 27.17 meters. Dianna Duncan, with a personal best mark of 22.84 meters, and Issy Lebrun (22.75 meters) rounded out the event for King's.
 
Hammer Throw
King's dominated the event, taking seven of the top eight spots. Katey Shoemaker won the hammer throw with a mark of 46.12 meters, while Delaney Hilferty finished second with a personal best toss of 43.35 meters. Caitlin Kirk placed third with a throw of 40.22 meters, and Anna Bellucci came in fifth with a mark of 38.62 meters. Rhian Crowley (36.59 meters), Sophia Lukowski (34.84 meters), and Brandy Varner (34.50 meters) rounded out the sixth, seventh, and eighth spots, respectively, in the event.
 
Javelin Throw
The King's women had another strong outing in the javelin as Katey Shoemaker took second with a mark of 37.54 meters. Delaney Hilferty placed sixth with a toss of 31.76 meters, while Dianna Duncan placed eighth with a personal best throw of 20.51 meters. Issy Lebrun rounded out the King's throwers in 10th with a mark of 18.55 meters. Misericordia's Alexandra Snyder topped the field with a throw of 38.75 meters.
 
Shot Put
The Monarchs took the top three spots, led by Brandy Varner with a throw of 11.63 meters. Sophia Lukowski placed second with a personal best toss of 10.53 meters, and Delaney Hilferty claimed third with a mark of 10.48 meters. Roni McClelland finished fifth with a throw of 9.90 meters, while Caitlin Kirk rounded out the field with a toss of 9.47 meters.

King's is set to wrap up their weekend tomorrow as they compete in day two of the Millersville Metrics in Millersville. Action is set to begin at 10:15 a.m.
