DOYLESTOWN, PA (April 6, 2024) - - King's College baseball swept Delaware Valley this afternoon in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom doubleheader after winning the first game 3-1 and the second game 4-1 at the Aggies' home field, Frank Wolfgang Field.
Nick Ciszak recorded a double in the first game, while
Jaiden Wanamaker also hit a double in the second followed by
Jacob Sutton with a triple to contribute to the Monarchs' win. King's is now 7-14 overall this season and 3-8 in MAC Freedom play.
Game 1 - W, 3-1
The Monarchs put themselves on the scoreboard quickly in the first inning as
Zach Day got on first by error and then advanced to second on a pass ball just before Ciszak hit a double to send Day home for the RBI. King's continued to lead 1-0 for the next six innings until they put up two more in the seventh.
King's played strong in the field after tallying three double plays between the third, fourth and fifth innings. In the top of the seventh inning,
Brennen Schneider and
Owen Kosar got on base with back-to-back singles before Sutton stepped to the plate and singled up the middle to send Scheider in for the Monarchs' second run of the day. Wanamaker was then hit by a pitch to load the bases before Day was walked, which allowed Kosar to score to put King's ahead 3-0. The Aggies scored a run for themselves in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough to for a comeback as the Monarchs ultimately came out on top 3-1 to end the first game.
Matt Masala picked up his third win of the season on the mound after throwing two strikeouts and allowing only eight hits in 25 at-bats. Day led the Monarchs scoring with one run and an RBI in addition to a hit, followed by Kosar with a run and two hits. Sutton and Ciszak both contributed a hit and an RBI each, while Schneider added a run and a hit.
Game 2 - W, 4-1
The Monarchs got a quick start in the first inning again in the second game. Wanamaker doubled as the lead off batter for King's and then advanced to third as Day singled down the left field line.
Chase Yochem then grounded out to first base, but still earned the RBI as Wanamaker ran home to score. Day reached third on Yochem's at-bat before
Caleb Graham grounded out to second, but also picked up an RBI as Day scored. The first inning ended with a King's 2-0 lead.
King's played tough defense the next four innings, never allowing more than one runner on base each inning, however the Aggies held their own as well in the field. Neither team scored again until the bottom of the sixth when Delaware Valley doubled in their second at-bat to put runners on second and third before a King's throwing error allowed the Aggie on third reach home. The sixth inning ended with a close 2-1 game, but the Monarchs still led.
Neither team scored in the seventh inning, but King's stepped it up in the eighth to build its lead. Schneider singled to second base followed by
Zach Jenkins sending a hit up the middle to both get on base before Sutton ripped a triple to send them both home. Both the Monarchs and Aggies had scoreless final innings as King's defeated Delaware Valley 4-1.
Adin Hoderewski earned his second win on the mound this year after throwing two strikeouts and allowing only five hits in 34 at-bats. Sutton led King's offense with two RBIs and two hits, followed by Yochem with two hits and an RBI and Schneider, Day, Jenkins and Wanamaker all with two hits and a run each. Graham contributed a run and an RBI as well.
King's returns to Lipo Field tomorrow, April 7, to take on the Aggies again beginning at 2 pm for another MAC Freedom game.
