Cameron Jones Puts Up First Goal of 2024 Season in 1-1 Draw with Susquehanna

WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 24, 2024) -- The King's College men's soccer team tied the Susquehanna River Hawks 1-1 Tuesday evening at McCarthy Stadium, moving to 3-2-2 and handing the River Hawks their second draw of the season to put them at 5-1-2. The all-time series record between the two programs is now 6-16-2.

Philip Permyashkin got things going for the Monarchs early in the game, taking a corner kick 1:36 into the first half. The remainder of the first 45 minutes of play proved to be extremely competitive as each team tallied five shots, the River Hawks with two corner kicks and five fouls while the Monarchs with three corner kicks and four fouls. King's goalkeeper Ben VanValkenburg and Susquehanna's Tony Burns each tallied two saves. Susquehanna's junior midfielder Sam Netzley was issued a yellow card in minute 34. The score was 0-0 going into halftime.

Three minutes into the second half, King's sophomore forward/midfielder Cameron Jones took three consecutive shots, but was unable to convert. In minute 59, Susquehanna had a corner kick, Max Paczewski took a shot that went off-target, followed by another corner kick and a shot by Henry McElroy to the bottom center of goal. Sophomore defender CJ Anderson came up big to help keep the ball out of the net and maintain an even score.

In the 67th minute, Susquehanna's Hayden Swinehart put the River Hawks on the board first to make it 1-0. In minute 81, the Monarchs answered back as Jones followed through on a perfectly placed header off the foot of first-year forward Jackson Nuttall. Jones' first goal this season and Nuttall's first collegiate assist tied the game 1-1. Only one more shot was taken through the last nine minutes of the game and the score remained 1-1 as time expired.

The Monarchs are back in action this Saturday, September 28 as they host Stevenson University for homecoming at McCarthy Stadium at 5 p.m.
