WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 6, 2024) – The King's College men's soccer team is in Washington, D.C. this weekend for Catholic University's Turk Emekli classic. The Monarchs improved to 3-0-0 after beating Penn State Behrend 3-1 in the first match up of the weekend, making the Nittany Lions now 1-2-0 on the season.

Ben VanValkenburg got his second-straight start in net after securing a shutout in his first collegiate start last game against Penn College.
After a relatively slow start to the first half,
Cameron Jones and senior captain
Bryce Nunes recorded shots on goal within two minutes of each other but were unable to convert. Five minutes later in minute 17, on his second shot attempt of the game, Nunes scored his first goal of the season off an assist from sophomore
Philip Permyashkin.
Three yellow cards were issued throughout the first half: the first to
Jackson DiBease in the 27
th minute and to Behrend's Andrew Cassano in minute 31 and then Owen Petersen in the 43
rd minute. Other than cards, the playing field was even as both teams tallied five shots in the first half. The Monarchs led the Nittany Lions 1-0 going into halftime.
King's came out of the break hungry for more as Permyashkin took a shot on goal one minute into play, followed up by sophomore
Saul Lagunas Jr. scoring his first collegiate goal less than ten seconds later. Lagunas Jr. was later issued a yellow card in minute 61 and the Nittany Lions got on the board with a goal from Johnathan Swann assisted by Cole Thomas and Jac Caputo.
Following a sequence of substitutions and three Nittany Lion fouls, Nunes scored his second goal of the game, this time off a penalty kick in the 79
th minute, to make it 3-1.
The last ten minutes of play remained competitive as Behrend had two shots on goal and three fouls while the Monarchs had two fouls and an additional yellow card issued to
Cameron Jones with seven second left in the game.
King's is back in action on Sunday as they face former head coach Connor Keenan and his new squad at Catholic University at 1:30 p.m. at Carlini Field in Washington, D.C.
