Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men's Ice Hockey's Third Period Surge Falls Short at Nazareth

ROCHESTER, NY (November 29, 2025) -- The King's College men's ice hockey team wrapped up their Thanksgiving weekend road swing with a two-goal rally in the third period, but ultimately fell 5-3 to Nazareth University in nonconference action at the Tim Horton's Iceplex. The Monarchs move to 1-7-1 on the season, while the Golden Flyers improve to 5-4-0.

The Monarchs opened the game with a strong defensive stand, as Zane Burleigh and Cristo Walker each blocked early attempts. Diego D'Alessandro was sharp in goal, making nine saves in the first period. Despite this, Nazareth broke through at 5:14 to take a 1-0 lead.

King's generated 15 shots in the opening frame, including multiple bids from Kevin Martin and Grant Parshall. The hosts added a power-play goal in the final minute of the period to head into the intermission up 2-0.

The Monarchs were assessed an interference minor in the first minute of the second period but did a tremendous job preventing the Golden Flyers from putting the puck on net. Nazareth only managed one shot on goal on the power play, which was turned aside by D'Alessandro

King's received a power play of their own at 3:58 and made quick work, getting on the board just 30 seconds into the man advantage. After a Logan Gallagher slapshot from the slot sailed wide, Parshall collected the puck at the goal line and chipped a short pass across the crease to Thomas Soucy. Soucy easily potted a one-timer into the back of the net to bring the score to 2-1. Parshall and Gallagher picked up assists on Soucy's fourth goal of the season; a power play marker at 4:28.

Nazareth responded with three goals in the middle frame at 12:00, 12:22 and 16:04 to build their lead to 5-1 heading into the second intermission. Despite the surge, D'Alessandro stood tall with 23 saves in the period to keep the game within the Monarchs' reach.

King's opened the third period with a surge of offensive pressure, with Landon Bechtolt, Artsiom Barashkin, Bennett Anklewich and Gallagher all firing pucks on net within the first five minutes of play.

The Monarchs' efforts produced a goal at 4:07, when a long-range shot from Anklewich gave the Nazareth netminder some troubles and forced him to give up a rebound. After battling in front of the net to gain control of the puck, Martin dished a quick pass to Denys Arkhypenko, who lofted a shot past the sprawling goaltender to pull King's within three of tying the game. Martin and Anklewich assisted on Arkhypenko's second of the season.

Sensing a shift in momentum, the Monarchs continued to pressure the Golden Flyers' defense with strong forechecks to keep play contained to the offensive zone. Carrying the puck down the far-side boards, Teodor Benno Vaage moved the puck to Soucy behind the goal line. Soucy slipped a pass to Walker, who was crashing the net and completed the tic-tac-toe play with a one-time goal at 5:45 to make it a 5-3 contest.

Between the pipes, D'Alessandro continued to fight off shots down the stretch in the final frame; making seven saves to keep the Golden Flyers off the score sheet in the third. He picked up some help from Benno Vaage and Barashkin - each of whom blocked a shot to keep the Monarchs within striking distance.

The Monarchs continued to press in search of a pair of quick goals, outshooting Nazareth 13-10 in the third and pulling D'Alessandro in favor of an extra attacker with just over two minutes to play. Benno Vaage registered a shot on goal, however Nazareth hung on through the final buzzer to seal the 5-3 result.

King's fired 36 shots on goal and went 1-for-2 on the power play. Soucy led the way with a goal and an assist, while Arkhypenko and Walker each scored in the third-period rally. Gallagher, Parshall, and Anklewich chipped in helpers, with Parshall pacing the team with five shots on goal. Martin added four shots and dominated the faceoff circle with 17 wins as the Monarchs controlled possession for stretches of play. Parshall contributed 16 wins as the team excelled in the circle; winning 42 of 79 draws at the dot.

Defensively, the team blocked nine shots and were led by Benno Vaage's three. In goal, D'Alessandro turned in a strong 41-save performance - including 23 in the second period alone - to keep the Monarchs in contention.

The Monarchs hit the road once again on Friday, opening a two-game road trip in New England at Keene State. Puck drop against the Owls from Keene ICE is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
