21-Point First Quarter Not Enough as Football Falls to Widener

CHESTER, PA (November 8, 2025) -- The King's College football team saw its four-game win streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon as a fast start was erased by a surging Widener University squad, falling 40-24 in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) match-up at Leslie C. Quick Stadium. The Monarchs drop to 5-4 overall and 5-3 in the MAC, while the Pride improve to 4-5 on the season and 3-5 in conference play.

King's came out firing in the first quarter, scoring touchdowns on three of their first four drives. With 10:30 remaining in the first quarter, Jaelin Mims dropped back and threw a pass on the right sideline to Tyler Carey, who was receiving soft coverage from the defense. Carey dodged one tackler, spun past another and dove into the end zone for a 22-yard touchdown, putting the Monarchs ahead 7-0 early in the first frame.

An errant punting operation for the Pride saw the Monarchs in plus territory, starting their drive at the Widener 26-yard line. After a first down run from Jayon Hailey and a personal foul on the Pride, Brennan Robinson received three straight carries, capped off by a one-yard score to give King's a 14-0 advantage with 6:58 left in the opening quarter.

Mims and the Monarchs put an exclamation point on an explosive first quarter with 1:54 to go in the frame. The sophomore quarterback connected with Hailey on a 15-yard corner route where Hailey blew past man coverage and found himself wide open running towards the back pylon for Mims to place a perfect ball in the breadbasket and put the Monarchs up 21-0 in the first.

The Monarch defense held strong through Widener's first three drives; forcing three-and-outs on each of the Pride's possessions. King's depth on the defensive side of the ball was apparent early on, as Matt Blakemore, Jacob Mullery, Mustafa Thompson, Khalil Holley, Michael Richino, Xander Murray, Jayson Howarth and Mason Afanador were all credited with tackles in the first ten minutes of action.

Widener responded in the second quarter, chipping away at the deficit with a 36-yard field goal and a 21-yard touchdown pass. After a King's fumble, the Pride added another field goal from 30 yards out to cut further into the Monarch's lead; which stood at 21-13 heading into halftime.

The Pride tied the game early in the third quarter on a five-yard touchdown pass, followed by a successful two-point conversion. A blocked punt returned 44 yards to the end zone gave Widener its first lead of the afternoon at 6:53. The Pride added a 19-yard field goal late in the third, but King's answered with a 24-yard field goal from Aaron Losada to cut the deficit to 31-24.

Widener extended its lead in the fourth with a 25-yard field goal and a five-yard rushing touchdown.

One of the game's most electric moments came on special teams, as Carey broke free for a 75-yard kickoff return, setting up the Monarchs deep in Widener territory. Despite the field position, a fourth-down pass came up short at the Widener 12-yard line to seal the result.

Mims finished the day 17-of-32 for 169 yards with two touchdowns, while Robinson led the ground game with 90 yards and a score on 18 carries. Carey hauled in six catches for 79 yards and a touchdown, and Hailey added 39 yards and a score on four receptions.

Defensively, Hulsizer led the Monarchs with seven tackles, including a sack and a tackle for loss. Tarylle Stewart and Murray each added five tackles and a tackle for loss, with Murray also recording a sack. Nathan Taylor and James Mangine each broke up a pass, while Gavin Wolfe punted four times for 131 yards, including one inside the 20.

Losada was perfect on the day, converting all three extra points and his lone field goal attempt. Carey returned six kickoffs for 187 yards, including a long of 75.

King's will look to bounce back as they wrap up the regular season on the road at Misericordia next Saturday. Kickoff in the MAC match-up with the Cougars is scheduled for noon.
