Field Hockey Edged 2-1 by Drew in Season Opener

WILKES-BARRE, PA (August 29, 2025) – Following the equalizing goal in the second quarter, the King's College field hockey team let up a goal in the third quarter and could not recover as they fell in the season opener, 2-1, to Drew University on Friday night. The Monarchs move to 0-1 on the year as the Rangers improve to 1-0.

Drew struck first in the opening period, converting a penalty corner opportunity when Emily Caporrino scored at 10:45. King's goalie Emily Bollinger responded with a series of strong saves to keep the Monarchs close as the first quarter ended.

King's responded early in the second quarter with their lone shot of the night, which found the back of the net. Sophomore Abbey Grulke scored at 17:13 off an assist from Melanie Tlatenchi to even the score 1-1. Despite limited offensive chances, King's made their opportunity count.

The third quarter saw Drew regain the lead when Ellie Kopec scored at 34:09, assisted by Emma Rider. King's continued to push offensively, earning a penalty corner led by Shaylee Heffron, but were unable to break through the Ranger defense.

The Rangers controlled the game on the offensive end, taking 14 shots with 10 on goal compared to one from King's. Drew also had a firm grasp on the corners battle, taking 10 penalty corners while King's had just one corner kick.

Tlatenchi picked up her first assist of the year while the goal for Grulke was the first in her career as a Monarch.

In the final period, Drew held firm defensively, while Bollinger remained a steady presence in goal, making several key stops to keep King's within reach. The sophomore goalie tallied eight saves on the evening. The Monarchs attempted to put the pressure on Drew in the last two minutes but were unable to find the game-tying goal.

King's field hockey returns to action on Wednesday, September 3rd as they head to Allentown, PA for a matchup with Cedar Crest College at 7:00 PM.
