PITTSTON, PA (January 24, 2026) -- The King's College men's ice hockey team displayed grit and resilience on Saturday afternoon at the Revolution Ice Centre, mounting a third period comeback to secure a 1-1 tie before clinching the shootout win over Arcadia University. The Monarchs move to 2-14-2 on the campaign and 2-10-2 in the MAC, earning the extra point over the Knights in the shootout. Across the ice, Arcadia now stands at 7-8-3 overall and 4-7-3 in conference play.
Â
Thomas Soucy wasted no time establishing his presence, ringing a shot off the post just over a minute and a half into the contest. King's continued to buzz around in the offensive zone, as
Braydon Buckingham and
Steven Armstrong both put shots on goal to test the Arcadia goaltender in the early stages of the first frame.
Â
The Monarchs answered their first penalty at 3:30 with an organized kill that featured a pair of blocked shots by
Kevin Martin and
Mikey Harrel Jr. along with a timely save by netminder
Ben Williams to keep the game scoreless. While up a man, the Knights committed a hooking infraction to send play to a 4-on-4 stretch before the Monarchs transitioned directly into a power play of their own at 5:30.
Â
The abbreviated power play featured four shot attempts, but King's was unable to break through before the advantage expired. The Monarchs continued to stack shots in even strength play through the middle portion of the period, stringing together seven attempts over a four minute span. At the other end, Williams steadied the period with several saves while
Landon Bechtolt,
Jayden Baldinelli and Martin all blocked shots down the stretch to limit Arcadia's scoring chances.
King's made a late push in the closing minutes of the first period, as Baldinelli sent a trio of shots towards goal. All three bids were blocked before they reached the goal, sending both teams off the ice locked in a 0-0 tie.
Arcadia opened the second period with pressure measured strictly by shot attempts, but Williams settled the early sequence with back to back saves before the one-minute mark. King's responded by countering with a push of its own with shots on goal by Armstrong and
Zane Burleigh early on in the middle frame. At 6:12, the visitors broke through to take a 1-0 lead.
Less than thirty seconds after the goal,
Bennett Anklewich rang a shot off the post as the Monarchs attempted to answer back. The effort to level the score had to survive consecutive Arcadia power plays at 8:21 and 10:21, however the King's penalty kill unit did an outstanding job of limiting high-danger scoring opportunities. Williams was only tested five times over the four-minute span, denying each scoring bid with some help from a
Cristo Walker block.
King's closed the period by regaining offensive rhythm and got their best scoring chance to that point when a puck was lofted off the back glass during a zone entry, taking a strong bounce and falling right onto the tape
Jerry Rausch. With just over four minutes remaining in the period, Rausch wristed a shot from point-blank range that was turned aside by Arcadia's goaltender.
Â
After 40 minutes of play, the Monarchs returned to the locker room with a one-goal deficit to surmount.
Â
The third period opened with a back-and-forth series of play, as both goaltenders remained sharp to keep the score at 1-0. King's generated several scoring opportunities, but were stifled by the Knights' forecheck and pass disruptions.
Â
Midway through the period, Arcadia was assessed a slashing minor, setting the stage for a pivotal power play. After cycling through the offensive zone, King's finally cracked the Arcadia defense when
Grant Parshall sent a cross-ice pass to Soucy, who had slipped through traffic and found open space in front of the net and tapped the puck home for a power play goal. Parshall and
Teodor Benno Vaage picked up helpers on Soucy's team-leading seventh goal of the season, leveling the score at 1-1.
Â
The game returned to a stretch of high-pace, end-to-end action following the game-tying marker, with King's registering four shots in the next three minutes while absorbing an Arcadia power play beginning at 14:27. That penalty kill again leaned on Williams, who stopped a pair of shots. With both teams trading saves in the final minutes, regulation ended level as Williams denied two more shots with some help from a
Denys Arkhypenko block, sending the game to a sudden-death 3-on-3 overtime period.
Â
Puck possession was a point of emphasis on both sides as the Monarchs and Knights moved methodically down the ice, careful not to commit a costly turnover. Benno Vaage recorded the lone King's shot on goal in the five-minute period while Williams continued to stand tall, making two saves on shots within the last 45 seconds of overtime.
Both goalies were perfect through the first two rounds of the shootout before Soucy came up clutch yet again, slowly maneuvering left to right from the near-side hash marks towards goal. After a slight pause with the puck on the tape of his stick, Soucy wristed a shot past the netminder's blocker side to set the stage for Williams to shut the door on the Knights. The Monarchs goaltender did just that, sticking a shot attempt away from the goal to put the finishing touches on a thrilling comeback.
Â
Soucy paced the offense with a goal in regulation and the shootout, leading the team with seven shots on goal. Armstrong followed with five, while
Gianmarco Caringi finished the day with four. In the faceoff circle, Martin led the way with eight wins at the dot.
Â
Martin contributed on both ends of the ice, blocking a team-high three shots. He was trailed by Harrel Jr. and Anklewich with two apiece. Between the pipes, Williams turned in a strong 33-save performance.
Â
The Monarchs hit the road on Friday, January 30 for a MAC clash with Alvernia University. Puck drop against the Golden Wolves from the Body Zone Sports and Wellness Complex is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
