COLMAR, PA (January 24, 2026) -- After holding a one-goal advantage over the Knights for a large portion of the game, the King's College women's ice hockey team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to Arcadia University on Saturday afternoon at the Hatfield Ice Arena. The Monarchs fall to 1-17-0 on the season and 1-13-0 in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC), picking up a point in the standings by taking the game to overtime. Meanwhile, the Knights improve to 12-4-2 overall with a 10-3-1 record in conference play.
Â
After
Emma Heinrich created the Monarchs' first scoring chance of the game with a shot less than a minute into the contest, King's battened down the hatches defensively as Arcadia established early offensive‑zone time. The Monarchs responded by stacking blocks and steering shots to the perimeter. Goaltender
Will McPherson anchored the stretch with multiple early saves as the Knights generated a steady run of attempts from all over their attacking zone.
Â
The Monarchs began to develop some momentum later on in the first frame, firing off four more shots in the period from
Abby Barlocker,
Melanie Baldwin Van Meer,
Amanda Sokol and
Sammi Stead. King's skaters finished the period with four blocks to support McPherson, who turned aside all 16 shots they faced to send the game to the first intermission scoreless.
Â
King's began the second period under pressure and were assessed a minor penalty at 4:27. The Monarchs killed the power play thanks to a series of blocks from
Annie Sommer,
Eva Goner and
Brenna Munn along with a pair of McPherson saves.
Â
The breakthrough arrived at 10:55 of the second, when Barlocker found herself in a 2-on-1 zone entry with Stead. Barlocker unleashed a wrist shot from the top of the faceoff circle that sailed top shelf past the goalie's blocker. Her second goal of the season gave the Monarchs a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Knights responded with a push of their own, sending a barrage of pucks towards goal and drawing a penalty with just under two minutes in the period. McPherson stood tall, denying 12 more bids before time in the middle frame expired. Sommer, Barlocker and
Riley Kumrow contributed blocks in the defensive zone to preserve the Monarchs' one-goal lead heading into the final 20 minutes of regulation.
Â
After killing off the remaining 17 seconds of the Arcadia power play, King's faced extensive pressure in their own zone as the Knights generated several back-to-back scoring opportunities. The Monarchs earned its lone power play at 9:34. While on the man advantage,
Jerrett Tietz,
Victoria Fleury-Wright and Sommer all had scoring bids but the power play came up empty-handed.
Â
As play returned to five-aside, the Knights upped their pressure once again and sent four shots towards goal in just over 30 seconds; three of which were saved by McPherson and the fourth was blocked by Sokol. With under two minutes remaining in regulation, the Monarchs continued to protect their one-goal advantage.
Â
Arcadia pulled the goaltender late for an extra attacker and converted with only seven seconds on the clock to tie the game 1-1 and send it into overtime.
Â
Overtime began with a pair of Arcadia looks as the Monarchs worked to settle the puck. McPherson made three saves in the extra frame to keep it level in the early minutes. The Knights delivered the dagger at 2:02 of overtime to decide the game.
Â
Barlocker led the way for the Monarch offense with a goal on two shots, tying
Maddie Vaughan and Kumrow for the team lead. The junior forwards was also a steady presence in the circle, winning a team-high 13 faceoffs.
Â
Sommer led the team defensively with three blocked shots, followed by Vaughan, Barlocker and Sokol with two each. McPherson had another stellar outing in net, making 62 saves - just seven shy of their season-high.
Â
King's returns home to the Revolution Ice Centre on Friday, January 30 for a 7:00 p.m. battle with MAC opponent Alvernia University.
