PITTSTON, PA (January 3, 2026) -- The King's College women's ice hockey team suffered a 10-1 setback to Rivier University in the team's final nonconference matchup of the season, Saturday afternoon at the Revolution Ice Centre. The Monarchs drop to 0-12-0 on the campaign, while the Raiders improve to 8-4-0.
Both goaltenders were tested early in the first frame, as
Hayley Packer and the Rivier netminder turned aside shots in the beginning stages of the contest. The Monarchs' penalty kill unit saw its first action of the day after King's was assessed a minor for hooking. Packer denied three scoring opportunities while
Brenna Munn,
Victoria Fleury-Wright and
Caitlin Dube all blocked shots to keep the game scoreless as play returned to even strength.
Shortly after the Raiders' power play, the visitors got on the board to take a 1-0 lead at 5:52. King's responded with an immediate push.
Amanda Sokol generated a chance off the faceoff and
Sammi Stead followed with back-to-back shots moments later as King's briefly tilted the ice. The Rivier goalie stood tall to preserve the one-goal lead.
The Raiders tacked on a goal at 9:54 and scored again on the power play at 11:52 to expand their lead to 3-0. Rivier found the back of the net at 15:01 to take a 4-0 lead into the first intermission.
Maddie Vaughan opened the middle frame with an early scoring opportunity just 42 seconds into the period that was denied by the Rivier netminder.
Mylei Chowdhry - who entered at the start of the period in relief of Packer - made four saves to start the period. She received some help from Stead, who got in the way of a shot
Rivier extended the lead at 8:26 of the second period with an even-strength goal. The Monarchs tried to respond with chances from Stead and Sokol, but both were turned aside. The Raiders tacked on a goal at 14:51 to make it 6-0.
King's continued to battle and got on the board when
Eva Goner ripped a shot from the point that found its way through traffic and past the Rivier goaltender, cutting the deficit to five. Goner's first collegiate goal came unassisted at 15:53.
Late in the period, King's went to the power play and generated multiple looks, but key saves and several blocked shots by the Raiders preserved the five-goal lead heading into the third.
Rivier opened the third period with a short-handed goal at 1:43, pushing the score to 7-1.
King's continued to battle, forcing the goalie to make several saves in succession, including stops on bids by Vaughan and
Emma Heinrich.
Rivier converted on the power play at 15:08. Just ten seconds later, the Raiders scored again at even strength to make it 9-1. The visitors sealed the win with a final goal at 16:42.
Goner produced the Monarchs' lone goal of the afternoon, while Vaughan led the team with four shots. Heinrich, Sokol and
Riley Kumrow all generated three shots. In the faceoff dot, Vaughan controlled a team-high 15 draws as
Abby Barlocker and
Kiana Dizon won seven apiece.
Defensively, the team blocked 30 shots and were led by Dube's seven. Fleury-Wright and Dizon followed, each laying out for five blocks. Between the pipes, Packer (19) and Chowdhry (26) combined for 45 saves.
King's hits the road on January 9, returning to Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) play with a two-game series at Lebanon Valley College. Puck drop against the Flying Dutchmen is slated for 7:00 p.m.
