PITTSTON, PA (February 7, 2026) -- Facing a 5-2 deficit heading into the third period, the King's College men's ice hockey team stormed back with three unanswered goals in the final 20 minutes to take a 5-5 tie out of Saturday afternoon's Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) matchup with Lebanon Valley College at the Revolution Ice Centre. After a scoreless 3-on-3 overtime period, the Flying Dutchmen edged King's in the shootout to claim the extra point. The Monarchs move to 4-15-3 on the campaign and 4-11-3 in the MAC. Lebanon Valley now stands at 7-12-3 overall and 7-8-3 in conference play.
King's and Lebanon Valley traded early chances as both sides settled into a fast pace from the opening faceoff.
Zane Burleigh put the first King's shot on net just over a minute in followed by a look from
Gianmarco Caringi that sailed just wide shortly after.
Monarch goaltender
Ben Williams was sharp early, turning aside chances in quick succession to keep the Flying Dutchmen off the board. In front of Williams, King's defenders pitched in to keep pucks away from the crease, as
Jayden Baldinelli and
Zane Burleigh both got in shooting lanes to block shots. The Monarchs began to mount pressure in the offensive zone, as
Braydon Buckingham,
Denys Arkhypenko and
Justin Spurrell all rattled off shots in the span of 45 seconds.
The momentum was halted when LVC was awarded the first power play of the game, sending King's to the penalty kill. Despite being down a man, the Monarchs still threatened offensively when
Thomas Soucy raced down the ice on a shorthanded breakaway. After getting the goaltender to bite on a deke, Soucy rang a shot off the post, nearly missing a chance to put a tally on the board.
Shortly after Soucy's breakaway attempt, Lebanon Valley capitalized on the power play to take a 1-0 lead at 10:03. The Monarchs answered with sustained zone time later in the frame as
Grant Parshall,
Bennett Anklewich and Spurrell each generated looks during a prolonged offensive push. Williams and the King's penalty killers were forced into a defensive stand late in the period, highlighted by consecutive blocks from Burleigh and Soucy and a shot off the pipe from the visitors at 18:29 before a late 5-on-3 power play goal made it 2-0 heading into the first intermission.
Lebanon Valley extended the lead to three just 14 seconds into the second period on a carryover power play.
The Monarchs headed to the man advantage shortly after the goal and got to work, setting up in the offensive zone thanks to a blue line keep-in by
Teodor Benno Vaage, who rang the puck around the boards to Buckingham behind the net. Soucy lit the lamp on a dish from Buckingham to cut the deficit to 3-1 at 5:37. Buckingham and Benno Vaage picked up helpers on Soucy's team-leading 10th goal of the season.
Momentum continued to build as a quick zone entry by Spurrell led to a juicy rebound on a shot from the top of the circle by
Landon Bechtolt.
Kevin Martin - who was crashing the net on the play - buried the loose puck to bring King's within a goal of tying the game. Bechtolt and Spurrell assisted on Martin's third of the season at 7:54.
Lebanon Valley answered midway through the period to restore a two-goal margin, but King's continued to generate chances. Baldinelli,
Jerry Rausch,
Mikey Harrel Jr., and Caringi each tested the goaltender during another extended stretch of zone time.
The Monarchs' penalty woes continued late in the middle frame as the Flying Dutchmen converted on yet another power play, taking a 5-2 lead into the final 20 minutes of play.
King's entered the third period undeterred by the deficit, as Burleigh and Buckingham put pucks on net before a power play opportunity swung momentum further in the hosts' favor. The Monarchs only managed one shot on the man advantage, but continued to break up passes and relentlessly forechecked as they searched for an opportunity to get back into the game.
That opportunity came at 4:06, when a faceoff win by Martin trickled back to Baldinelli, who unleashed a wrist shot from the far wall that sailed through traffic and beat the netminder five-hole to bring King's back within a pair of the Dutchmen. Martin assisted on Baldinelli's first of the season.
Moments later, King's faced a five-minute penalty kill that proved to be the turning point of the game. Williams turned aside a barrage of shots from multiple angles while Benno Vaage, Martin, and Burleigh combined for key blocks during the extended defensive stand.
Soucy continued to create scoring chances on the penalty kill, picking up a loose puck and tearing down the ice. After beating a defender, he swung from right to left - switching from backhand to forehand - and outlasted the goalie's effort to block the open goalmouth. Soucy slid the puck home with an unassisted tally at 8:31, notching his second of the game and 11th of the season to pull the Monarchs back within a goal of tying the contest.
King's continued to push as
Steven Armstrong, Bechtolt, Martin, Anklewich, and Buckingham all generated chances during a prolonged shift in the offensive zone.
Armstrong completed the comeback with an impressive individual effort, catching his opponent in the faceoff circle off guard with a forehand move to free the puck while carrying his momentum towards the goal. The junior lifted a low-angle wrist shot that clanged off the crossbar and into the goal, electrifying the bench and tying the game 5-5 at 15:25.
Baldinelli came up with three late shots before the period ended, but each bid was either blocked, saved or sent wide, sending the game to overtime.
In the five-minute 3-on-3 period, Williams made critical saves on multiple chances while Martin added another block and Harrel Jr. forced a save at the other end. Neither side could break through, officially sealing the result as a tie and sending the contest to a shootout.
In the shootout, Armstrong, Soucy, and Parshall were turned aside, while the visitors converted once to claim the extra point in the MAC standings.
Soucy delivered another standout performance for the Monarchs with two goals including a shorthanded marker. Martin also tallied two points on a goal and an assist while Baldinelli and Armstrong chipped in crucial goals to fuel the comeback. Martin and Parshall paced the King's centers with 10 wins each at the faceoff dot.
Defensively, Burleigh led the way with a whopping six blocked shots, while Baldinelli and Soucy each added two. Williams was outstanding in net, making 41 saves over 64:45 of action to keep the game within King's reach throughout.
King's returns to action on February 13, hosting cross-town rival Wilkes in a MAC showdown. Puck drop against the Colonels from the Revolution Ice Centre is set for 7:00 p.m.
