On August 30, 2005, Brian Donoghue was introduced as the new head women's basketball coach at King's College. In the process, he became just the fifth coach in King's women's basketball history since the program began in 1974-75. The 2015-16 season will mark Donoghue's 11th season at King's.
Donoghue came to King's after serving three seasons as the lead assistant coach at Division II East Stroudsburg University. In his ten seasons at King's, he has guided the Lady Monarchs to a combined 151-116 record and seven Freedom Conference Tournament berths, including second-place finishes in 2006-07, 2011-12, and 2012-13. Donoghue also has an NCAA tournament berth to his credit, advancing to the "Sweet 16" with the 2011-12 squad that finished 24-6. That season he was also named the D3Hoops.com Mid-Altantic Region "Coach of the Year".
Donoghue graduated from Drexel University in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural Engineering. While attending Drexel, Donoghue served as an assistant boy's coach at his alma-mater, Haverford High School, before moving to the assistant boy's coach at Interboro High School from 1994-95.
In July of 1995, a 23-year old Donoghue received his first head coaching opportunity when he took over a struggling program at Penn State Delaware County. As a part-time head coach without an opportunity to recruit during his first-year at the two-year college, Donoghue endured through a 1-14 record in his first season. He would slowly build the program, however, and led the team to four straight Commonwealth Campus Athletic Conference playoff berths from the 1998-99 season through 2001-02.
Donoghue guided his 1998-99 team to an 18-5 record and the CCAC championship while earning conference "Coach of the Year" honors. The following year, the team finished 17-6 and was second in the CCAC Tournament. In his final two years, the team suffered through an injury-riddled 8-13 mark in 2000-01, before improving to 14-11 with a CCAC playoff berth in what would eventually be his final season at Penn State Delaware County.
Donoghue, however, decided to give up a career in engineering to pursue a full-time collegiate coaching job. He was presented with that opportunity when East Stroudsburg University hired him as its lead assistant coach in October of 2002. While at ESU, Donoghue served as the program's Recruiting and Defensive Coordinators. His responsibilities also included perimeter and post-player development, scouting, game-plan preparation, game scheduling, and monitoring the team's academic progress.
Donoghue is a 1989 graduate of Haverford High School where he was a three-sport varsity letterman, competing in basketball, football, and baseball. He is an active member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), twice presenting at the National Convention alongside assistant coach Caitlin Hadzimichalis.
In his ten seasons at King's the Lady Monarchs have been named to the WBCA Division III Academic Top-25 Team Honor Roll five times including four of the past five years. This past summer Donoghue was invited to attend the WBCA's Center for Coaching Excellence workshop at Columbia University.
Donoghue and his wife Andrea, a certified athletic trainer, reside in nearby Kingston. The couple are the parents of three children.
