KING'S FIELD HOCKEY FALLS TO WILKES 4-3 IN OT, WILL HOST FDU IN MONDAY PLAYOFF GAME

EDWARDSVILLE – Amanda Peters scored three goals, including the game winner with just 0:08 left in the first overtime period as host Wilkes University posted a 4-3 victory over King's College in the regular-season finale for both teams Sunday at Artillery Park. The game was a makeup contest from Tuesday's original date postponed due to weather.

With the win, Wilkes clinched the top seed for the Freedom Conference playoffs, improving to 16-2 and 7-1 in league play. King's slipped to 14-4 and 5-3 in conference games and enters the playoffs as the number-four seed.

King's will host fifth-seeded FDU-Florham in the opening round of the Freedom Conference Tournament Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Betzler Fields. Wilkes will have a first round bye and will await the winner of the King's-FDU contest on Wednesday.

Wilkes started out quickly and took a 1-0 lead just 3:51 into the game when Peters knocked in a crossing pass from Alyson Paulauskas. Peters would score again at 11:50 on assist by Brittany Sines.

King's would get on the board when Christina Glenn drilled in a shot from just inside the circle off a short crossing pass from Debbie Wychock during a penalty corner as the Lady Monarchs cut the lead to 2-1 at 25:40.

In the second half, King's would knot the score at 2-2 when Jenera Quinones scored unassisted just 2:51 into the period. The Lady Monarchs would scored their third straight goal to take a 3-2 lead at the 56:14 mark when Shawna Walp was perched on the far post and tapped in a perfect crossing pass from Glenn. Wilkes, however, would even the count at 3-3 just 3:21 later when Erica Sunberg struck net off an assist by Chelsea Minix.

Playing seven-on-seven in overtime, King's had an opportunity to win the game midway through the extra session when Wilkes goalie Lindsay Davenport came out of the net to challenge King's Debbie Wychock who maneuvered past a Lady Colonel defender and had a one-one-one chance. Wychock's initial shot caromed off of Davenport's pads and the King's senior retrieved her own rebounds, retreated backwards and lofted a scoop shot over the Wilkes' goalie head. The shot caromed off the upper right post as the game continued.

With time running out, Wilkes would win the game when Peters managed to push the ball past King's goalie Erin McGinley with the final seconds winding down.

Wilkes held a slim 15-14 advantage in shots as well as 9-8 lead in penalty corners. McGinley made five saves while Davenport also posted five stops.

Tickets for the Freedom Conference playoff game at King's are listed at $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $2 for students, while children under age six will be admitted free.
