WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 2, 2026) -- The King's College field hockey team opened both its season and home schedule with a 2-0 victory over Cedar Crest College on Wednesday evening at McCarthy Stadium. The Monarchs improve to 1-0 on the year, while the Falcons fall to 0-1.
 
King's controlled play throughout the night, finishing with advantages in shots (15-5), shots on goal (12-4), and penalty corners (12-3). The Monarchs generated several early opportunities, earning a pair of penalty corners in the opening quarter and forcing the Cedar Crest defense to withstand sustained pressure, but the contest remained scoreless through the first half.
 
The pressure continued to build after halftime as King's earned six penalty corners in the third quarter alone. Shaylee Heffron, Davina Krappa, Amelia Mason, and Melanie Tlatenchi each generated scoring chances during the stretch, while the Falcons' goalkeeper turned aside several attempts to keep the match scoreless.
 
King's finally broke through at the 40:46 mark of the third quarter. An entry pass from the Monarchs near the 25-yard line was redirected off a defender's stick and found Gwen Erb with only one defender standing between her and the cage. The first-year maneuvered around the defender and slipped a shot into the far left side of the cage for the first goal of her collegiate career and the first goal of the season for King's. Tlatenchi earned the assist as the Monarchs moved in front 1-0.
 
The Monarchs doubled the lead early in the fourth quarter. After earning another penalty corner, team captain Davina Krappa stepped up for a penalty stroke opportunity and lifted her shot past the goalkeeper's stick side at 48:06 for her first goal of the season, extending the King's advantage to 2-0.
 
Cedar Crest was limited to one shot in the second half and managed only five total shots on the evening. The Falcons earned three penalty corners, but the Monarch defense remained organized throughout the match to preserve the shutout.
 
Erb finished with a goal on three shots, while Krappa added a goal and three shots of her own. Tlatenchi recorded an assist, and the Monarchs consistently generated offensive pressure, placing 12 shots on goal and producing 12 penalty corners.
 
Tierney Hogan earned the shutout victory in the first collegiate appearance of her career, making one save in 60 minutes in goal. Allie Chocallo added three defensive saves, including two in the opening frame, helping anchor a defensive effort that held Cedar Crest scoreless despite four shots on goal.
 
King's returns to action on Saturday, September 5 with a home matchup against the Immaculata University Mighty Macs at 1:00 p.m.
