KING'S-WILKES FOOTBALL GAME TO BE TELEVISED LIVE SATURDAY ON FOX-56
WILKES-BARRE -- The 2009 Mayor's Cup Football Game between host King's College and cross-town rival Wilkes University will be televised live on Saturday by Fox 56 WOLF-TV. The game will be televised on Channel 5 on all local cable companies and channel 56 on Direct TV and the Dish Network. Kickoff is set to begin at 1:05 p.m. with the pre-game show slated for 1:00 p.m.
Bob Ide and John Mendola will serve as commentators while Erin Dugan is slated as the sideline reporter.
King's and Wilkes will meet for the 23rd time as the teams enter the 14th year competing for the Mayor's Cup. The teams began playing for the Mayor's Cup in 1996, beginning with former mayor Tom McGroarty and continuing today with current mayor Tom Leighton, a 1982 King's graduate. Since the 2000 season, Wilkes owns a 6-3 advantage in the series.
King's enters the game with a 2-7 overall record while standing 1-6 in the Middle Atlantic Conference. Wilkes, meanwhile, is 6-3 overall and 3-3 in the MAC.
“We are extremely excited about Fox 56 broadcasting the game live and providing Northeastern Pennsylvania with the opportunity to see one of the most intense, yet respectful rivalries in college sports,” King's sports information director Bob Ziadie stated. “It has been proven time and again that you can throw the records out the window when King's and Wilkes play each other. It is great game to watch for many reasons but one of the biggest reasons is that so many of the players on both teams know each other, player with each other, or played against each other in high school.”
Immediately following the game, the formal presentation of the Mayor's Cup will be held. Additional, one player from both King's and Wilkes be presented with a game most valuable player award.
