KING'S FIELD HOCKEY TEAM STUNS 14TH RANKED WILKES 2-1 IN OVERTIME CLASSIC

KINGSTON – Jenera Quinones pushed across the game-winning goal 8:53 into overtime as the third-seeded King's College field hockey team stunned second-seeded and host Wilkes University 2-1 in Freedom Conference Tournament semi-final classic Wednesday at Artillery Park.

With the win, King's improved to 10-8 on the year while Wilkes, ranked 14th nationally in the latest womensfieldhockey.com poll, fell to 15-3.

Shawna Walp
King's, which fell to Wilkes 3-2 in the regular-season meeting between the two teams, reached the scoreboard first when Shawna Walp (left) scored in close following a short pass from Shelby Trenge 16:14 into the game. Wilkes wound counter just 3:01 later when Jenna DiSabatino scored into the upper right corner of the net following a pass from Amanda Peters. The teams would go into the halftime break knotted at 1-1 and engaged in a furious second half that featured numerous momentum changes and missed scoring chances by both teams. Wilkes controlled the much of the first 20 minutes of the second half but were unable to score while King's dominated the final 10 minutes of play but could not reach the back of the cage.

In the first overtime period of seven-on-seven play, King's again had the better chances and finally cashed in following a penalty corner when Walp attempted to score in close but the ball headed toward the left post where Quinones knocked in the loose ball to send the Lady Monarchs to an emotional, hard-fought victory.

Wilkes outshot King's 21-13 and held a 19-14 advantage in penalty corners. King's goalie Erin McGinley was outstanding with eight big saves while Wilkes keeper Lindsey Davenport stopped six shots.

King's advances to the Freedom Conference championship game on Saturday where the Lady Monarchs travel to meet top-seeded Eastern University at 1:00 p.m. in St. David, Pa. Eastern defeated fourth-seeded Delaware Valley 2-1 in overtime on Wednesday
