KING'S WOMEN'S SOCCER FALL TO SCRANTON, 6-0
WILKES-BARRE – Caila Zappalo scored two goals as the University of Scranton women's soccer team posted a 6-0 victory over host King's College Tuesday evening at McCarthy Stadium in the Betzler Athletic Complex.
With the win, Scranton improved to 5-1 while King's slipped to 2-4
Scranton opened the scoring when Sydney Parker made good on a through pass up the middle by Emily MacPhee just three minutes into the game. Chelsea Paskman made it 2-0 following a crossing pass from Eileen Sodano with 33:13 left in the first half. Scranton tacked on an important goal with just 3:26 remaining in the first half when Emily Farrell's shot from the right wing found the upper left corner of the net.
Scranton built a 4-0 lead at the 40:36 mark when Christina Cognetti scored on a shot that dipped just under the cross bar from 30 yards out. The lead grew again when CaIla Zappalo scored off an assist from Sarah Gibbons at 63:32 for a 5-0 advantage.
Zapalla added the final goal with 2:37 remaining when she scored off a short chip in the box from Alana Bencivengo.
Scranton outshot King's 20-3 and held a 6-1 lead in corner kicks.
King's goalie Melissa D'Aniello made eight saves while Scranton keepers Caitlin Byrne, Liz Piliero, and Caitlin Mancuso combined for two stops.
The Lady Monarchs will return to the pitch on Thursday with a 4:00 p.m. matchup in Clarks Summit against Baptist Bible College.
