KING'S FIELD HOCKEY OUTLAST FDU 2-1 IN DOUBLE-OVERTIME TO REACH CONFERENCE FINALS
WILKES-BARRE – Jenera Quinones, who earlier in the day was named Freedom Conference "Player of the Year" scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime as the second-seeded King's College field hockey team posted a dramatic 2-1 victory over third-seeded FDU-Florham in a Freedom Conference Tournament semi-final matchup Wednesday at McCarthy Stadium in the Betzler Athletic Complex.
With the win, King's improved to 15-4 overall and advances to the Freedom Conference title game for the second straight season as well as for the fourth of the last five years. FDU, meanwhile, fell to 10-10.
After a scoreless first half in which King's had a commanding 12-1 advantage in shots, FDU broke through when Megan Springmeyer scored at with 24:40 remaining in the contest when she redirected a blocked shot into the net.
King's continued to bomb away and finally scored the equalizer on its 23rd shot of the game when Shelby Trenge scored off a center pass from Quinones with 7:50 remaining in regulation.
The game entered overtime with both squads fielding seven players each. The Lady Monarchs continued to dominate play but were still unable to score despite a 13-1 advantage in shots during the first extra frame. Finally, in the second overtime, Quinones gained possession on the right wing and when Devil keeper Tess Loughran came out to challenge, the King's junior standout maneuvered around Loughran and drilled a the winning shot into the back of the net after 90:19 of play.
King's dominated the game statistically, outshooting FDU 40-7 while owning a commanding 25-7 advantage in penalty corners.
King's goalie Erin McGinley was only needed to make two saves, but came up with an outstanding blocker stop early in the second overtime Loughran kept the Devils in the contest posting 22 saves in the contest.
The Lady Monarchs will now travel to face top-seeded, defending champion Eastern University in a rematch of the 2009 title game won by Eastern. The teams played earlier in the year with Eastern posting a 4-3 victory at McCarthy Stadium. Eastern (18-2) posted a 3-0 victory over fourth-seeded Delaware Valley College in Wednesday's other conference semi-final.
