Game Stats

WILKES-BARRE – Senior quarterback Corey Lavin threw for 305 yards on 22-of-37 passing and three touchdowns, tying the school career mark with his 31st touchdown pass, as host King's College posted a 45-14 win over FDU-Florham on senior day Saturday at McCarthy Stadium.

With the win King's records its first victory of the 2010 season, standing 1-8 overall and 1-5 in MAC play. The win also marks the first victory for first-year head coach Jeff Knarr.

King's opened the game in fine fashion as Lavin connected with freshman Chris Greene for a 23-yard touchdown, capping off a seven-play 70-yard drive to take a 7-0 lead. FDU-Florham would give the ball right back to the Monarchs on their first drive, as a botched snap was recovered by King's Ryan Cordingly deep in FDU territory at the 39-yard line. Following a 16-yard completion to Jay Torres, Lavin connected with David Abdalla, this time for a 25-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 14-0 with 9:08 left in the first quarter.

After a three-and-out possession from FDU, King's began their third drive at their own 18. Two completions to Torres, including a 21-yard connection, followed by a seven-yard pass to tight end Ken Loomis moved the Monarchs into Devils territory at the FDU 46. A 10-yard strike to Abdalla and another completion to Loomis move King's to the FDU 14. The King's drive stalled from there, and the Monarchs settled for a 25-yard field goal from Ryan Cain to take a 17-0 lead with 1:06 left in the first quarter.

King's defense came up big again to begin the second frame, forcing another Devils' turnover when Ryan Kelley stripped Andrew Scamporino giving King's possession back at the FDU 43. The Monarchs did not waste their prime opportunity as Matt Spencer made the Devils' pay with a 43-yard touchdown run on the third play of the drive to extend the lead to 24-0 with 14:28 left in the half.

After another FDU punt, King's assumed possession at the Devils 49. Matt Spencer ran for 11 yards, before Greene showed his offensive skills with his legs with a 32-yard touchdown scamper down the left sideline giving King's a commanding 31-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

FDU finally answered on offense as the Devils used a seven-play, 59-yard drive capped off by a Matt Jeffers 26-yard touchdown pass to Doug Van Orden to put the Devils on the board 31-7. King's used one last push late in the second quarter as Lavin used his feet from one yard out to cap off a 10-play, 70-yard drive to give King's a 38-7 lead heading into the break.

King's picked-up where they left off in the third quarter forcing yet another three-and-out from FDU. The Monarchs started their first drive of the second half at their own 47. After two incomplete passes, Lavin struck for his third touchdown of the game, as the senior signal-caller found Torres streaking down the middle of the field for a 47-yard touchdown score extending the lead to 45-7.

After two sequential punts from each squad, FDU took over at their own 5-yardline. On the drives second play, Heffers connected with Bayshawn Wells for a 95-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 45-14 with 4:26 left in the third quarter.

The teams would trade possessions in the final quarter before King's emptied its bench, as several senior players were greeted with applause as they left the field for their final home contest.

King's held huge advantages in several statistically categories. The Monarchs offense was nearly unstoppable going for 81 plays and a season-high 524 yards. The Monarchs also picked-up 26 first downs to the Devils seven. King's was equally as impressive on the defensive end holding the FDU offensive attack to 209 total yards, including only 30 yards of offense on the ground.

Lavin finished with a season-high 305 yards passing, putting him at 1,924 yards on the season. His three touchdowns in the contest gives him 31 career passing touchdowns, tying the school career record held by Tom Pierantozzi '01. The ground game was balanced throughout as Eric Ofcharsky finished with 74 yards, while Spencer totaled 69 yards and one touchdown. Greene was a two-way threat for the Monarchs with 74 all-purpose yards, posting a reception and rushing touchdown in the win. Torres led the receiving core with eight catches for 153 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Cordingly had a team-best six tackles. Evan Crisman followed with five tackles, while senior Craig Geibert finished with four stops and one sack in his final home game.

King's will conclude its 2010 slate with a matchup against cross-town rival Wilkes University for the annual Mayor's Cup Saturday at 12:00 noon at Ralston Fields.
