KING'S BASKETBALL TEAMS HOST MANHATTANVILLE IN FREEDOM CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER SATURDAY, VIEW LIVESTATS, LISTEN TO WRKC VOICE STREAM

 

WILKES-BARRE – The King's College men's and women's basketball teams continue their Freedom Conference slate when they host Manhattanville College Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium. The women's game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. tip, with the men's to follow at 3:00 p.m.

The Lady Monarchs enters the contest after posting a 77-71 overtime victory at Eastern University in their Freedom Conference opener on Wednesday. Sophomore guard Celia Rader leads the offense averaging 15.3 points and 4.0 rebounds, shooting 30.8 percent (12-39) from behind the arc and 78.3 percent (18-23) from the free throw line. Junior forward Paige Carlin follows with 13.5 points and 4.8 rebounds. Sophomore guard Lindsay Atchison adds 9.7 points and a team-high 7.3 rebounds, including a 17-point, 13-rebound effort in the win at Eastern. Sophomore guard Kaitlin Michaels chips in 9.0 points and 4.5 rebounds, while sophomore forward Molly Dahl remains steady force inside the paint averaging 6.5 points and 6.3 rebounds. Junior point-guard Brittany Muscatell posts 5.3 points and a team-best 17 assists. The Lady Monarchs average 68.3 points per-game, while yielding 76.2 points per-contest.

 

King's has lost four of the last six meetings between the schools since Manhattanville joined the Freedom Conference in 2007-08. The Valiants swept King's last season, posting a 64-52 win at home before taking a 59-56 decision in Wilkes-Barre.

 

Manhattanville comes into the game standing 3-3 overall and 1-0 in Freedom play following a 6-58 win against DeSales University on Wednesday. Senior guard Simona Gordon tops the Valiant's attack averaging 13.5 points and 3.0 rebounds, shooting 42.5 percent (31-73) from the field. Sophomore guard Taylor Wilson follows with 9.3 points and 3.8 rebounds. Junior guard Courtney Turner adds 8.7 points and a team-high 5.2 rebounds, while sophomore forward Janetta Arnold anchors the frontcourt averaging 8.3 points and 4.2 rebounds. Manhattanville averages 59.7 points per-game, while allowing 65.2 points each contest.

 

The King's men's squad looks to right the ship Saturday after three straight defeats. The Monarchs stand 2-3 overall and 0-1 in league play after suffering a 62-52 loss at Eastern University on Wednesday. Senior forward Kevin Conroy leads the Monarch attack averaging 14.6 points and 5.2 rebounds, shooting 40.0 percent (24-60) from the floor. Conroy, who became the 25th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point mark, will be honored prior to the contest. Junior point-guard Kyle Stackhouse follows with 9.4 points and a team-high 9.0 rebounds. Sophomore guard Matt Fiorino has been a spark off the bench posting 9.3 points on 7-for-15 shooting from three-point range. Rookie guard Kyle Hammonds posts 8.8 points and 2.2 rebounds, while sophomore guard Dan Maguschak contributes 5.8 points and 2.8 rebounds each contest. King's averages 59.0 points per-game, while yielding 62.0 points each contest.

 

King's owns a 4-3 mark against the Valiants since Manhattanville joined the Freedom Conference three years ago. Last season the Monarchs posted their first win in Purchase, N.Y., 62-59, before taking a 77-58 victory at home.

 

Manhattanville enters the game with a 5-1 overall record and 1-0 in conference games after posting a 67-55 win against defending Freedom champion DeSales University on Wednesday. Junior guard Trevoy Pointer leads the Valiants offensively averaging 18.3 points and 4.0 rebounds, shooting over 50.6 percent (39-77) from the field. Senior guard Lamar Glass follows with 12.2 points and 4.0 rebounds, canning 11 treys on the year. Senior forward Peter Mehmel adds 11.3 points and 3.5 rebounds to round out the double figure scorers. Manhattanville averages 71.5 points per-game, while allowing 63.7 points each game.

 

Following the games, both King's squads will take a break from Freedom play to host a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday. The women host Rutgers-Camden at 6:00 p.m. while the men welcome Penn State Hazleton at 8:00 p.m in Scandlon Gymnasium.
