MONARCH BASEBALL GOES EXTRA INNINGS TO DEFEAT MORAVIAN 6-4
BETHLEHEM - - The King's College baseball team pushed across two runs in the 11th inning as the Monarchs posted a 6-4 victory over host Moravian College Tuesday in Bethlehem.
With the win King's improved to 17-10 on the year while Moravian slipped to 17-11.
King's struck first in the top of the second inning when Brian Mikus singled down the right field line. Sean Rooney would follow with a single to right center field to move Mikus to third base. Eric Matula, would drive in Mikus with an infield ground out to give the Monarchs a 1-0lead .
Moravian countered with four runs in the bottom of the second inning Dave Zubia singled and Jason Huber triple down the left field line. Jon Baltz then doubled down the left field line to drive in Huber before Kevin O'Keefe hit a two-run home run to give Moravian the 4-1 lead.
In the fourth inning, King's Eric Matula tripled down the left field line and scored on a Pat Harsch double to cut the score to 4-2. King's added another run in the top of the sixth inning as Matt Unger led the inning off with a double to right center field and later scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Sean Rooney bring the Monarchs to within 4-3.
King's would tie the game in the top of the seventh as Rob Lemoncelli singled through the right side and would go to second on a sacrifice bunt by Joey Troxell. Rob Fravel smacked a double to right center field to drive in Lemoncelli to knot the score at 4-4.
The two teams would remained tied until the top of the 11th inning. Rooney led off with a single through the right side, and moved to second on a fielder's choice, allowing Eric Matula reached base on a bunt. Two batters later Jeremy Bonser singled through the right side to drive in Rooney from third base. Troxell would drive in Matula from third with the final run of the game on an infield ground out to push the score to 6-4. Levi Tate would sit the Greyhounds in order in the bottom half of the 11th to seal the victory.
King's 13-hit attacked was paced by Sean Rooney who went 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI. Rob Fravel, Matt Unger, Brian Mikus and Pat Harsh were all 2-for-5 for the Monarchs.
Tate picked up the win for King's in relief, going two and two-thirds innings while surrendering one hit to Moravian.
The Greyhounds were led by Kevin O'Keefe who went 4-for-5 with one run scored and two RBI. Jason Huber and Jake Schweitzer both had two hits each. Kyle Longernecker took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits with one strikeout in four and one-thirds innings.
King's returns to action Wednesday as the Monarchs host Scranton at 4:00 p.m. in the Betzler Athletic Complex.
