KING'S FIELD HOCKEY FALLS TO ELIZABETHTOWN 3-2 IN PENALTY STROKES
WILKES-BARRE – Elizabethtown College rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit post a 3-2 overtime victory in penalty strokes over host King's College in a non-conference field hockey matchup Tuesday at McCarthy Stadium.
With the win Elizabethtown improved to 5-3 while King's slipped to 7-2 and saw its seven-game win streak come to an end.
Shawna Walp gave King's a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal 4:19 into game. The Lady Monarchs struck again at 10:27 when Danielle Terracciano redirected a perfect crossing pass from Calli Berryman inside the left post for a 2-0 Lady Monarch advantage at the break.
The Blue Jays cut the lead to 2-1 on a penalty corner when Liz DeMatteis scored at 42:51 when she knocked in a rebounded ball following a blocked shot. Elizabethtown sent the game to overtime when Caitlin Grimes scored off a Meg Cassels crossing pass with 6:15 left in the contest.
After two scoreless 15:00 periods of seven-on-seven overtime, the game would be decided in penalty strokes. After both teams missed their first attempt Sam Redeles scored for the Blue Jays. King's countered on a goal by Shawna Walp. After both squads missed their third attempt, Etown took the lead when Cassels struck net. King's, however, was unable to answer and as the Blue Jays held a one-stroke lead entering the fifth and final series. Julie Foster would seal the win for Elizabethtown with a goal just inside the right post for a two stroke advantage.
Elizabethtown held a 17-15 advantage in shots and an 11-5 lead in corners. McGinley was outstanding in goal for King's, making 11 saves, including several diving stops in overtime.
King's returns to action Thursday with a 7:00 p.m. home contest against Albright College.
