KING'S FIELD HOCKEY DOMINATES WILKES, 8-1
WILKES-BARRE –
Jenera Quinones scored three goals and dished out two assists while
Calli Berryman added three goals of her own as the King's College field hockey team picked up its most impressive win of the season as the Lady Monarchs dominated cross-town rival Wilkes University 8-1 Wednesday night at McCarthy Stadium.
With the win, King's improved to 10-5 overall and 3-2 in Freedom Conference play. Wilkes, meanwhile, fell to 3-9 and 2-3 in league competition.
King's took a 1-0 lead with 14:47 left in the first half when Quinones scored off an assist by
Lindsay Mercer. The score grew to 2-0 when
Shawna Walp struck net unassisted just 2:24 later. King's built a 3-0 advantage when Quinones drilled in a rocket shot with 4:53 left in the opening stanza.
Wilkes got on the board when Ashley Ream scored following a penalty corner on a pass by Lauren Pauling as King's took a 3-1 into the halftime break.
In the second stanza King's came flying out of the gates as Berryman scored off an assist from Quinones just 2:12 into the final frame. There, the flood gates opened and Berryman scored again at 29:20 before
Jackie Sikora found the back of the net at 24:33 to push the score to 6-1. Berryman then scored her third goal 2:14 later and Quinones closed out the scoring with her third goal of the game with 17:11 remaining, allowing Lady Monarch coach Cheryl Ish to clear the bench.
For Quinones, the reigning Freedom Conference “Player of the Year” totaled eight points on the night, increasing her career mark to 150 points on 60 goals and 30 assists. She ranks third all time at King's in scoring, trailing Debbie Wychock (163) and Lindsay Sabo (157).
King's held a 21-2 advantage in shots and a 6-5 edge in penalty corners.

Brittany Naylor combined to make one save. For Wilkes, starting keeper Lindsay Davenport posted nine stops while allowing five goals. Jenna Schill yielded the final three goals and made five saves.
The Lady Monarchs return to action Saturday with an important 1:00 p.m. matchup at Misericordia University.
