KING'S BASKETBALL SQUADS HOSTING FDU-FLORHAM SATURDAY IN FREEDOM DOOUBLEHEADER, VIEW LIVESTATS

 

WILKES-BARRE – With five games remaining on their regular season schedules, the King's College men's and women's basketball teams are positioning themselves for one of four playoff spots in the tightly contested Freedom Conference. On Saturday both King's squads will try to improve their position as they welcome FDU-Florham to Scandlon Gymnasium for a Freedom doubleheader. The women's game will tip-off at 1:00 p.m. with the men's contest to follow at 3:00 p.m.

The Lady Monarchs, who owned the top spot for the majority of the season, have dropped their last two Freedom games including a 55-53 defeat against Eastern on Wednesday. King's currently is tied for second place with DeSales University at 6-3.

Sophomore guard Celia Rader leads the offense averaging 13.5 points and 3.2 rebounds, shooting 36.8 percent (46-125) from behind the arc. Junior forward Paige Carlin follows with 11.0 points and 4.9 rebounds. Sophomore guard Katlin Michaels posts 9.8 points and 5.3 rebounds, while sophomore guard Lindsay Atchison adds 7.4 points and a team-high 6.6 rebounds. King's averages 66.1 points per-game, while allowing 63.8 points each contest.

 

The FDU-Florham women's team enters the contest with an 8-11 overall mark, standing 4-5 in league play following a 65-55 loss against Delaware Valley College on Thursday. Junior guard Shaleah Alston tops the team averaging 15.4 points and 3.4 rebounds, canning a team-best 34 three-pointers. Freshman backcourt mate Brianna Nicholls joins Alston in double figures averaging 11.1 points and 5.1 rebounds. Junior forward Mantil Mangual adds 9.7 points and 5.3 rebounds, while senior forward Shealyn Taggart posts 7.5 points and a team-high 8.5 rebounds. The Devils average 61.4 points per-game, while yielding 64.3 points each tilt.

 

King's posted a comfortable 85-42 win in Madison, N.J. on January 8th in the teams' first meeting this year.

 

The Monarchs (12-8) earned an important 76-62 home victory against Eastern on Wednesday to move into a three-way tie for fifth place with Manhattanville and Eastern in the Freedom standings at 4-5. Each game is crucial in a crowded playoff race where two games separate first place from fifth.

Senior forward Kevin Conroy has proven to be the best forward in the conference averaging 17.7 points and 5.9 rebounds, shooting 51.3 percent (117-228) from the floor. On Wednesday, the Chatham, N.J. native moved into tenth place on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,301 points. Freshman guard Kyle Hammonds follows with 13.4 points, 4.9 rebounds and 41 three-pointers. Sophomore guard Matt Fiorino has been deadly behind the arc in the last five games posting 15.5 points including a career-high 24 tallies at Manhattanville. On the season, Fiorino adds 10.4 points shooting a conference-high 47.0 percent (47-100) from long range. Junior point-guard Kyle Stackhouse contributes 8.7 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 4.2 assists. King's averages 74.8 points per-game, while allowing 68.7 points each contest.

 

The FDU-Florham men's team stands 4-16 overall and 2-7 in league play after posting a 90-70 home win against first place Delaware Valley College on Thursday. The win snapped an eight game losing skid for the Devils that dated back to early January.

 

Junior guard Adam Katz leads the offense averaging 14.4 points and 3.9 rebounds, connecting on 39-of-123 three-point attempts. Freshman forward Will Green follows with 9.9 points and 7.6 rebounds. Senior center Ricky Fetske adds 9.2 points and 7.4 rebounds, while sophomore forward Derek Hall contributes 8.8 points and 6.5 rebounds. The Devils average 65.6 points per-game, while yielding 69.4 points each contest.

Following Saturday's play, both King's teams will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to Doylestown, Pa. to face Delaware Valley at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
