MONARCH SOCCER TEAM FALLS TO MISERI 2-0 IN FREEDOM CONFERENCE SEMI-FINALS
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College men's soccer team saw its fine season come to an end but also took a glimpse at what appears to be a very bright future as the Monarchs dropped a 2-0 decision to Misericordia University in the semi-finals of the Freedom Conference Tournament Friday in Dallas.
With the win, Misericordia improved to 12-6-2 while King's finished with a 10-6-2 mark.
Misericordia took a 1-0 lead into the half-time break when Andy Bush scored off an assist from Eric Kishbaugh 22:01 into the game. In the second half, the Cougars pushed across the final goal of the game with 20:33 remaining in the contest.
Misericordia outshot King's 14-8 and held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. Monarch goalie Mark Labbadia made five saves in goal for King's while Misericordia goalie Barry Fitzgerald posted two stops.
Despite the loss, the Monarchs can look at season that was more successful than many anticipated. King's lost a number of players from last season's squad and were picked fifth in the Freedom Conference Pre-Season Coaches Poll.
The Monarchs had only one senior player on the team, defender Nick Armenti, and started a combined seven freshmen and sophomores along with three juniors. The Monarchs will return their top five scorers, as well 16 of 17 players who reached the scoring column this season.
