KING'S DESIR WINS 165-POUND TITLE AT RIT INVITATIONAL

ROCHESTER, NY -- King's College wrestling standout Tommy Desir won the 165-pound championship at the RIT Invitational Saturday at Rochester Institute of Technology.As a team, King's fnished eighth in the 11-team field.

Desir paced a Monarch line-up that saw four King's grapplers place. In addition, Ryan Longenberger was third at 197-pounds, Jamie Scarantino was fourth at 125, while Chris Mazzocchi was sixth at 149.


Desir won his first match by a pin in 1:14 over Mike Manwarning of Washington & Jefferson, then posted a 10-2 major decision over Simon Levin of Wesleyan to reach the semi-fnals. Desir then tallied a 14-8 decision over Blake Fisher of Oswego State before earning a 11-4 decision over top-seeded Tory Cain of host RIT.

After falling in the first round Longenberger received two straight medical forfeits in the consolations before posting back-to-back pins of Mikhail Solomonik of RIT and John San Fillipo of Wesleyan to reach the consolation finals. There he registered a 9-5 decision over Jake Swearingren of RIT.

Scarantino opened with a pin of Rich Glazier of Norwich in 3:22 but fell to James Hamilton of Wesleyan in the quarterfinals. In the consolation bracket, Scarantino won by a medical forfeit before pinning Kevin Ramkishun of Oswego in 4:23. In the consolation semi-finals he earned a 12-4 major decision to reach the consolation finals. There he fell 12-8 in a rematch with Hamilton.


Mazzocchi reached the 149-pound semi-finals for the Monarchs but settled for sixth. After a first-round bye, Mazzocchi posted a 12-5 decision over Zach McCarthy of Case Western, then followed up with a 12-2 major decision over Chris Levan of Washington & Jefferson to reach the semi-finals. There, he fell 15-5 to Dan Mirman of John Carroll. Mazzocchi then medically forfeited his two remaining consolation matches.

DeMarquis Holley reached the 141-pound quarterfinal round for King's but did not place. Holley posted a 5-0 decision over Alberto Lopez of John Carroll before falling 6-5 to Jake Goddeau of Oneonta. Holley then medically forfeited in the consolation round.


At 285, King's Peter Dwyer received a first-round bye, then won his second-round match with a pin in 0:32 over Collin Vozar of John Carroll. After Dwyer dropped a 3-1 decision in the quarterfinals to Joe Belford of Baldwin Wallace, he medically forfeited in the consolation bracket.

In the 157-pound class, Gordon Custer went 2-2 and did not place. Custer posted a decision and major decision in the consolations before being eliminated. At 133, King's Aaron Perez went 1-2 with his victory coming by pin in his first consolation match. Anthony Clifford went 0-2 at 174.

The Monarchs will now be idle until January 5 when King's competes in the annual Pennsylvania/New York Duals in Oswego, NY.
