MONAGHAN SCORES TWICE, INCLUDING OT WINNER AS KING'S FIELD HOCKEY DOWNS DESALES

CENTER VALLEY — Sophomore forward Alyssa Monaghan scored twice, including the game winner in overtime, as the King's College field hockey team posted a thrilling 2-1 double-overtime victory over host DeSales University Tuesday in Center Valley.

With the win, King's ended its season with a 8-8 overall mark while closing out Freedom Conference play with a 2-5 record. It marks the first time since the 2004 season that King's missed the Freedom Conference Tournament. DeSales, meanwhile, entered the game tied with Misericordia for second-place in the Freedom with Misericordia and must await the result of tonight's league game between the Cougars at Wilkes to determine the second seed for next week's conference playoffs.

KIng's scored first when Monaghan struck net off a corner feed from Abby McManus to give the Lady Monarchs a 1-0 lead with 30:55 into the game. DeSales sent the game to overtime when Alison Malatesta scored during a scramble in front of the KIng's net with 4:26 left in regulation. After a scoreless opening 15:00 overtime period of seven-on-seven play, Monaghan quickly ended the game when she beat a DeSales defender and beat Bulldog keeper Becky Rasmuson just 1:25 into the second overtime period. It was Monaghan's 14th goal of the year, including her third game-winner.

King's outshot DeSales 22-18 while also owning a 13-10 advantage in penalty corners. King's goalie Megan Withrow made eight saves while Rasmuson tallied 10 stops.

The win also allowed seven KIng's seniors to end their season on a winning note. Those players include Withrow, McManus, Kim Howanitz, Lindsey Paduck, Shelby Madden, Trudi Konopki, and Nicolette Pizzo.
