KING'S MEN'S SOCCER USES FIRST HALF BLITZ TO DOWN PSU-ALTOONA, 5-1
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College men's soccer scored five goals in a span of 11:52 to start the game as the Monarchs cruised to a 5-1 victory over visiting Penn State Altoona Wednesday night in McCarthty Stadium.
With the victory, King's improved to 9-4-4 while Altoona slipped to 8-10 on the year.
King's took a 1-0 lead with 38:55 left in the first half when Andrew Tumiello scored off a double assist from Niall Croke and Kevin Hagmeier. At the 33:24 mark, Daniel Hernandez drilled a rocket from 38 yards out into the upper left corner of the net to push the score to 2-0.
Just 0:43 later, Hernandez struck again off a pass from Brian Fenster to give the Monarchs a 3-0 advantage. The score grew to 4-0 at 29:13 when Tuminello redirected a crossing pass from Fenster into the Lion net. Just 2:10 later, Cameron Rhodes knocked in a free kick off the foot of Eric Stanfield to bring the score to 5-0.
Altoona finally reached the scoreboard when Chris Beech knocked in a loose ball in the box to cut the score to 5-1 with 7:11 left in the opening stanza.
Neither team would score in the second half as the Monarchs exclusively played their reserves.
Hernandez and Tuminello finished the game with two goals each while Fenster tallied two assists. King's goalies Mark Labbadia and Karl Jamiolkowski combined for one save.
King's held a 13-7 advantage in shots while also leading 4-1 in corners.
The Monarchs close out the regular-season Saturday with a 7:00 p.m. home matchup against DeSales University. The Monarchs need a win or a tie to clinch a playoff berth and could finish as the second, third, or fourth seed depending on other conference results.
