WILKES-BARRE — King's College senior Tommy Desir (Scranton/Scranton) claimed individual gold by wining the 165-pound weight class at the 2013 Monarchs Invitational Tournament Saturday in the Scandlon Gymnasium.  In addition, sophomore Ryan Longenberger (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg) was fourth.

Cortland State won the team title with 105.5 points among a field of 13 teams. They were followed by Roger Williams (87.5), Wilkes (85.5), Oneonta State (66.0), Lycoming (56.5), R.I.T. (56.5), Washington & Jefferson (49.5), Western New England (40.5), Gettysburg (36.0), Scranton (27.5), King's (27), Mt. St. Vincent (6.0), and Muhlenberg (0.5).

Desir was seeded third in the event and won four straight matches to claim the championship. In his first match he defeated Troy Cain of R.I.T. 7-1 before downing Tyler Cunningham of Gettysburg in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals Desir tallied a 5-2 decision over Sean Lombardi of Wilkes before registering a 6-3 win in the finals over top-seeded Shaun Gillen of Oneonta State.

King's only other place-winner was at 197 pounds where Longenberger was fourth. In his opening match Longenberger posted a 6-4 win over Mike Frizinia of Western New England before falling by fall in 3:36 to Chad Obzud of Oneonta State in the quarterfinals. In wrestkebacks, Longenberger earned an 8-5 decision over Ezekiel Stroupe of Washington & Jefferson before following up with an 8-4 decision against Camden Stoops of Gettysburg. Longenberger then gained a consolation semi-final 8-3 win over Nikolas Christine of Lycoming to reach the consolation final. There Longenberger saw his run come to and end with a medical forfeit after suffering  a minor injury in his previous bout.

The Monarchs wrestled in the event without a few of the teams top wrestlers, including 2013 NCAA Division III National qualifier Shane Stark at 184 as well as senior standout Christian Mazzocchi at 149. Due to early-season injuries the Monarchs were unable to enter wrestlers in three weight classes.
