KING'S MEN'S SOCCER UPSETS 8TH RANKED, PREVIOUSLY UNBEATEN EASTERN, 1-0

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College men's soccer team posted its most impressive win of the season as the Monarchs picked up a critical 1-0 Freedom Conference victory over previously undefeated Eastern University, the eighth-ranked team nationally in NCAA Division III. The game was a rematch of the 2014 Freedom Conference title game, won by King's in overtime.

With the win King's improved to 13-3-1 overall and 4-1-1 in Freedom Conference play. Eastern, meanwhile, shipped to 13-1-2 overall and is also 4-1-1 in league play. The win, the first-ever for a King's men's soccer team against a top-ten program, moved King's into a first-place tie with Eastern for the Freedom Conference lead and clinched a league tournament berth. But should the teams finish the regular-season with one loss, the Monarchs would hold the head-to-head tiebreaker for the top seed in the Freedom Conference Tournament.

The game was fiercely contested from start to finish. The teams ended the first half deadlocked at 0-0. But in the second half the Monarchs broke through with what proved to be the winning goal when Daniel Lorandini knocked in a crossing pass from the right win by Brian Fenster just 2:43 into the second half.

Neither team mounted serious scoring chances for much of the remainder of the game but the Eagles managed two shots on goal and two corner kicks over the final  six minutes but Monarch goalie Owen Geedey made two saves and the King's defense was able to clear the ball from its end on both corner attempts.

Eastern held a 10-7 advantage in shots and led 7-0 in corner kicks. Geedey made eight saves in the game for King's.
